In the early 1800s, New Milford was an important center for gun trade and manufacturing. Gun chokes were a common component of pistols and rifles, and their history can be found in the town’s firearms legislation. In 1792, New Milford passed a law that required all handguns to have a keyhole choke grip, which hampered the spread of disease. This law is still in effect today. In 1819, another important ordinance was passed in New Milford regulating the sale of guns. This law prohibited any person from selling or giving away Firearms without first obtaining a license from the Mayor or Board of Aldermen. It also forbid anyone from carrying any Firearms on their person without first getting written permission from the Mayor or Board of Aldermen. In 1847, another important ordinance was passed in New Milford banning private sales of firearms to individuals over 21 years old. This law prevented young adults from being able to purchase handguns and shotguns without parental consent. The ban was later repealed in 1851 by a vote of the Town Council. In 1865, yet another ordinance was passed in New Milford prohibiting any person under 20 years old from owning or possessing any Firearms whatsoever within the town Limits! This ordinance effectively banned juvenile access to firearms until they reached age 21 years old. The ban remains effective to this day! One of the earliest firearm chokes was a nutmeg, which was an early form of pistol grip stock. The nutmeg had a hole in the center that allowed the user to insert their finger into the hole to cock the pistol. This is similar to how most modern handguns are operated. The early pistols were also muzzle loading and used pouches to hold rounds rather than today's magazines. New Milford is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,897 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from the Dutch word "Nieuw-Middelburg" meaning "new city". The first settlers in what is now New Milford arrived in 1686 and were led by Pieter Zwaan and Jacob Brouwer. They built a small village on the banks of the Hackensack River and named it after their hometown of Middelburg in Holland. In 1702, they erected a large brick courthouse and decided to move their Village to central New Jersey because of concerns about Indian attacks. This was done because there was no room for them on the west bank of the Hackensack River where Newark lay. In 1812, John Denny founded what became known as Denny's Mills located along Route 1 south of present day New Milford. This milling company became one of America’s largest textile mills andproduced more than 12 million yards (10,000 m2) of cloth each year between 1825 and 1896. It also manufactured shoes, hats, boots and other items such as cravats and collarless shirts before closing its doors for good in 1896. At its peak production, Denny’s Mills employed over 1,500 people total who lived onsite within sight or sound of their workstations; an unheard-of number at that time! Today only a few remnants remain including some original millpipes still protruding from the ground near today's intersection with Edison Road
New Milford, New Jersey is located in the New Jersey Highlands and was first settled in the 17th century. The town was chartered on February 14, 1756, and named after a meadow near present-day Union Point. It grew quickly due to its advantageous location on the route of the Great Western Railroad and its strategic location midway between Newark and Princeton. The town's population reached 10,000 by 1800. In 1812, a smallpox epidemic killed over 60% of the town's population; however, through quarantine efforts the death toll decreased to just two people in 1814. The towns development stopped during World War II because of its strategic location as an important stop on troop movements across the English Channel. However, it has seen recent growth with a population of over 25,000 people as a result of new businessespromoting trade within New Milford and beyond.
