New Milford is a borough in New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,823 at the 2010 census. The name of the town has been spelled "New Milford" since 1681 when it was established by colonists from Connecticut as part of the now-defunct Province of New Netherland. It was first called Newtown and then Hatfield until 1785 when its name changed to New Milford because of the increasing population in that area. In 1812, it became part of Middlesex County and was annexed by Newark, New Jersey in 1834. Its incorporation as a borough occurred on April 14, 1898. The early history of New Milford can be traced back to 1681 when English settlers arrived seeking new land in what is now northeasternNJ following their successful efforts to settle Long Island Sound. They named their new settlement Newtown after nearby Hatfield, which had already been designated for that purpose by royal decree in 1785 due to an increase in population thereabouts during the previous decade (Fowler). Eventually Newtown absorbed the surrounding villages of Hatfield and Westville before becoming an incorporated town on April 14, 1898 (Galloway). As one might expect given its geographic location within Middlesex County – home to both Newark and Paterson – most aspects of life throughout much of nineteenth century were either shared or similar between these two municipalities. This included education: On July 1st, 1814, Newark schools opened their doors for students grades 1-6 (!), while residentschooled their own children until 1840 thanks largely to a donated school lot located just east of town along North Street (). Additionally – like many towns across America during this time – local merchants soon began doing brisk business selling goods produced within reach such as textiles and groceries direct from farm gates or doorsteps (Heiser). However, with economic development beginning to pick up outside Ofsted’s borders starting around 1880 due primarily to increased investment coming into congested NJ via railroads (#2) and other commercial waterways (#1), boundary revisions necessitated by these growing changes led ultimatelytothe annexationof neighboring municipalities including Hatfield on November 15th 1902() - an eventwhichmarkeda major change not only for our community but also for municipal government itself (#3; Heiser). These days we still referto ourselves collectively as “New Milfordians” even though technically we are located inside Ofsted limits! What followed over ensuing decades were some exciting times with school districts being formed/ merging/ relocating all throughout central NJ resultingin some incredible educational opportunities(!!); Frogtown High School opening its doorsamidst acresof forest northof town; developed housing areas burgeoning adjacentto Millburn & Hackensack Streets; businesses popping up all over central NJ catering mainly toworkers who preferred locality over sprawling suburbs; etcetera((!).) . However despite this bumper crop ol' growth & progressivism there were also several key incidents (& events) that impacted our community & region notably: 1976–77 : Daycare provider Jameson Carew killed 3 children aged 3-5 days old hours after leaving care facility his employer Arlene's Child Development Centers Inc.(!!!!!) ; 2nd highest homicide rate per 100K people in NJ during that period !!!!! #Crimeonthedeck # serial killer
New Milford, New Jersey was founded in 1764 by George Washington and his family. The town became a center of religious and political activity during the Revolutionary War, and was later renamed for General Lafayette. In 1815, the town was consolidated with neighboring Milford Township to form the new municipality of Monmouth County.
