He quickly built an experimental cotton plantation there which became one of the most successful slave-based cotton plantations in America. Fenton's descendants still own some of his original land today. During World War II many residents volunteered their time to help with military service or worked as unskilled workers in munitions plants or other industries across central NJ; however few have remained permanently resident since then because so many moved away during economic development throughout Central NJ over the years In 1969 when Edwin Meese III became president of USA he selected New Milford as one of 10 towns/cities targeted by UJA Health Care Incorporated (UJA) for redevelopment into lower income housing units under its "Homes For All Americans" program - this started what has been known as "Meese Meadow".
