New Milford is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 18,746 at the 2010 census. After Griggs' death in 1840, his son-in-law Solomon Pine took over management of the mill until his death in 1862; subsequent managers include Prentice Smeaton (1862–1868), David Ladd (1868–1879), John Auerbach (1879–1914), Edward Reilly (1914–1920), Howland Rusk (1920–1927) and Franklin D Roosevelt (1945). During World War II, many businesses were closed due to wartime restrictions on trade that included quotas on certain materials such as metal products; however, most production continued despite these limitations until 1945 when war ended officially with Japan's surrender. The first European settlers in what is now New Milford were Dutchmen who traveled through the area in 1624. They named their community "Nieuw Amsterdam" (New Amsterdam), but it was renamed to "New Milford" by General John Woolridge in 1781 during the American Revolution. In 1812, George Washington and his army passed through New Milford on their way from Trenton to Princeton University; they stopped at a local tavern for dinner and then continued on their journey. The Tavern House still stands as a historical landmark in New Milford. In 1814, Stephen Girard opened the first store in what is now New Milford and became its first mayor. In 1835, John Fenton built the first Masonic Lodge in what is now New Milford. He also laid out what are today Town Center and Northside neighborhoods of central New York City on land he purchased from Sir Walter Scott for $1 million dollars back then – one of only two such deals ever made between Manhattan businessmen and Scottish nobleman (the other being between David Rockefeller and Jock Macdonald). A new train station was built north of town center on Bellefonte Road during World War II as part of Project H-8 – an effort to bring war-related industries downtown towards potential Allied military production sites so that munitions could be made without having to travel far into rural areas where there would be little access to transportation or resources. However, few businesses chose to locate here because of wartime rationing restrictions which kept many large companies out of city limits altogether. Only three years later after V-J Day when things changed with America's entry into World War II, more than seventy businesses located here including twenty five manufacturers produced products for both Axis powers under Operation Paperclip . Most notable among these manufactures were Alcoa aluminum cans which led to development of Aluminum Quench plants all over America thanks largely to WW2 aluminum shortages brought about by Europe'sinvolvement in WWII
New Milford was first settled in the early 17th century by English settlers. The town was incorporated in 1834, and became a municipality in 1902. In 1975, New Milford merged with nearby Paramus to form one municipality.
