The first Europeans to visit what is now New Milford were Dutch traders and travelers who came through the area in 1624. They named the area "New Netherland" after Netherland, one of the seven original provinces of Holland. In 1764, George Washington and his forces burned down part of Trenton while invading Pennsylvania as part of their campaign against British Major General John Forbes's forces. This event helped start the American Revolution by helping to destroys some British supplies that were being transported through Trenton on their way to Philadelphia. The first post office in New Milford was established on December 12, 1764, with James Ives serving as Postmaster-General. The town was incorporated as a borough on April 14th, 1814; it became an independent township on November 3rd of that year. On December 12th 1814, during the American Civil War (1861–1865), Battle of Gettysburg took place in central New Milford when Confederate artillery shell shot into a schoolhouse located two miles east of town center killing ten children and wounding more than 60 people including many soldiers from America’s 6th Infantry Regiment which fought at Gettysburg. According to historian Joseph Ellis writing about this battle: “One account has it that over 20 cannonballs found their way into classes inside said building; these projectiles did considerable damage not only to structures but also killed 10 children within and wounded 60 others – making it one of worst massacres committed by Union troops during this war." In 1865, following the end of hostilities in America slavery ended throughout most of North America freeing all slaves there except for those held byNative Americans under treaty rights or Indian captors who continued enslavement until Confederation Day ( July 4th). Although new township boundaries were drawn excluding battlefield land east thereof they still include some acreage where cannonball holes remain today from both engagements
New Milford was founded as a small town in 1766 by Captain John Montresor. The town was chartered on May 15, 1786, and became an incorporated municipality on February 6, 1834. The population of New Milford grew rapidly during the late 19th century, reaching over 50,000 by 1900. In 1925, the city annexed the adjoining rural communities of White Sands and Easton. During World War II, New Milford served as one of the largest military bases in the United States and its citizens supported the war effort with their contributions to munitions production and other wartime activities. After the war ended, New Milford experienced rapid growth due in part to new industrial development. In recent decades, however, economic decline has led to significant challenges for the city.
