In 1684, General John Nicolls established the first permanent English settlement in what is now Middlesex County when he erected a house at Fordham Court House about eight miles (12 km) northeast of Trenton. By 1800, there were over 100 English colonists living in southeastern Monmouth and northwestern Camden counties as well as parts of Sussex and Hunterdon Counties east of Philadelphia. On April 14, 1868, portions of Union Township (now part of North Brunswick) were combined with neighboring East Brunswick to form a new borough named for George Washington's home county – Monmouthshire – after his father’s birthplace near Edinburgh on Scotland’s borders with England and Ireland. The name “Monmouthshire” has been used continuously since then by residents and businesses throughout the Borough without any official recognition by either government or local media outlets until recently; however it has long been considered one option among several contenders for Borough name selection when planning proposals are made to both municipalities collectively or individually over time. The history surrounding the establishment and evolution of New Brunswick can be traced back to 1868 when George Washington came home from Europe via sea voyage to visit his mother Martha Custis Washington at Mount Vernon following her husband John Adams' inauguration as President that year; Mrs.Washington had earlier traveled from Virginia along with her son1 but due to illness declined further travel than Philadelphia so Mr.Washignton paid her fare instead2 which only increased public curiosity about him across America3 even though he had no connection whatsoever with our state other than being born there4 -- something many people continue today6 largely because we commemorate Presidents variously through holidays such as July 4th7 or Fourthof July day observances8 each year!
