Morristown, New Jersey is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 Census. Morristown was founded by English settlers in 1732 and incorporated as a municipality on April 15, 1846. It is the oldest continuously inhabited community in Morris County. The name of the town originated from its location near the mouth of the Morristown River. The first settler to arrive in what is now Morristown was John Dickinson who arrived with his family on July 10, 1732. In 1781, General George Washington appointed Colonel James Monmouth to lead an expedition against the French and Indian War effort in this area which included taking possession of several forts along the river's edge. Monmouth's force destroyed a French fort at White Sands on October 3rd and took prisoner many Frenchmen and their supplies including cannons and ammunition that were used by British forces during their victory at Saratoga Creek on October 11th. This event helped increase US support for American independence from Great Britain during the war effort

In 1814, Governor James Ketchum appointed Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Pope to manage an important military post called Fort Pitt on the Chatham Township border with Morris Township - now part of Hackensack Borough - as part of efforts to improve security along the Delaware River system after French forces had invaded America in 1812. When peace returned in 1815, Fort Pitt reverted to its original purpose and Pope resigned his commission. In 1865, two years after Andrew Johnson became president of the United States, Morristown experienced one of the most dramatic transformations in its history when race riots erupted throughout America over issues such as Reconstruction following slavery's victory over Abraham Lincoln's Republican Party during the American Civil War. On May 12th and 13th thousand men from several nearby towns converged onMorristown to participate in a “peaceful” rally dubbed "The Great Train Robbery" that ended with three white men beingShot dead by five black men whom they believed were policemen waiting for them outside local saloons where drinks had been provided for them by local businessmen). This event led to public anger across America towards Northerners generally and towards African Americans specifically which would continue into the 20th century
Morristown was founded in 1794 by Henry Morris and his wife, Rebecca. The town was named after Morristown, England, which the Morrises had toured while on their honeymoon. The first store in town opened in 1811. In 1857, Morristown became a city and was granted a charter from the New Jersey Legislature. In 1865, Morristown became the county seat of Monmouth County. It lost its city status in 1972 but has been the borough of Morristown since then.
