The first settler in what is nowMorris County was Thomas Lydgate (baptized 17 Feb 1746) who erected a small log cabin on present-day Main Street about 1/4 mile east of where later Morristown Schoolhouse would be built. Lydgate's cabin served as a farmstead until 1800 when he sold land at present-day Sunrise Boulevard and Sunrise Avenue to John Knowles Jr., proprietor of Knowles' Ferry Landing which acted as an important transportation link between Philadelphia and points north during this period. In 1833, Welsh immigrants William Davies and Phillip Jones founded the village of Morganton on the opposite bank of the Susquehanna River from where it would continue to serve as a farming community until 1861 when it became an incorporated municipality with its own police force under Mayor James Wertly.* In 1881, following merger with nearby Township of Clinton*,Morris County was established comprising portions then located within both Morris Township*andClinton Township*. At that time there were only three townships in New Jersey: Burlington (northwest corner beyond Princeton Borough), Hunterdon (southwest corner beyond Passaic Borough), and Monmouthshire (east corner beyond Sussex Borough).
