In 1847, the Manchester Railroad reached Morristown and railroads replaced Canals as transportation methods for goods arriving from Philadelphia and other points north. Manufacturing began to take hold with industries such as tanning, brewing and soap making developing during this time. By 1905, most of what became Morristown had been developed with some timber farming still being done aroundpresent-day Mount Laurel Road/Route 9A within walking distance of downtown. In 1916, when World War I started, many jobs were available for soldiers returning home after fighting overseas;Morristony was one of these areas where industry thrived due to its close proximity to military bases across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Morristown is noted as the location of the first permanent white settler in what would become Morris County and for its role in both American Revolution and World War II. It was also home to the headquarters of Westinghouse Electric Company from 1892 until 1977. The first Europeans to come to what would become Morristown were Dutch farmers who arrived around 1637. In 1732, Englishman Robert Rogers established a small trading post near today's downtown Morristown while surveyors were mapping the area that would later be known as Morris County. Rogers named his post "Morganton" after Lord Camden, British Governor of North America at the time. By 1735, Morganton had developed into a small village with about 25 residents. In 1776, when hostilities erupted between Patriot forces and British troops during the American Revolution, Morganton quickly sided with Patriots and became one of their earliest supporters. By September 1776, more than two dozen people had left Morganton for Pennsylvania because of Patriot activities in upstate New York – including 10 men who founded Mount Holly on September 14th (present-day Hillside). On October 7th (later known as Weehawken Day), approximately 350 residents of Morganton gathered at Meeting House Square to swear allegiance to George Washington as part of "the Greatobvious". That same day John Glover from Gloucester Township came down with measles and died within hours; it is believed that this event helped drive many other villagers towards support for Patriots throughout New Jersey during the Revolutionary War era. By early November 1700, only 11 families remained living in Morganton proper while 200+ individuals lived scattered among surrounding villages and plantations - an almost unheard-of situation during those days when most colonists resided close to where they worked or farmered their land... At this point some sources state that “Walking Distance” was 1/2 mile compared to today’s “5 miles”... In short order over 1/3rd of all households in Morris County were either rural or agricultural self-sufficient by 1800... Many historians agree that without large scale outside assistance such as missionaries or roads building efforts like those which began occurring along Interstate 95 starting about 1820 [about], much smaller villages might not have survived into our current day environment." MORRISTOWN HISTORY: The Town Of Morgantown & Its Origins Morgantony Township was organized on March 6th 1802 under Director Jameson Auld from parts of Burlington Township.. On April 24th 1803 William Greenough became township director concurrent with Auld.. On July 15th 1800 Samuel Goodrich laid out section 5 north 2nd Street eastward from Market Place Corner across Broad Street & south side Road since then River Road has been called Main Street
On October 1, 1777, the Morristown town charter was accepted by the New Jersey General Assembly. The following day, Colonel John P. Monmouth and his men invaded the town from Canada and quickly captured it. The first settler in Morristown was Captain Anthony Wayne who arrived in 1778. He built a house on what is now Market Street. In 1781 Captain Wayne's son John erected a sawmill on Falls Road which became one of the important economic engines of the town during its early years.
