Morristown is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,711 at the 2010 census. Morristown is located on the southern border of Morris County and is bordered by Uniontown to the east, Plainsboro Township to the north, and Easton Township to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Morristown were Dutch settlers in 1664. A land grant from King George II of England was given to a group of thirteen farmers known as the "Patriots" on November 5th, 1676. Thepatriots were led by Joseph Reed who had served in Captain John Smith's force that invaded New Netherland in 1675. In 1701, when Morristown was incorporated as a borough within Morris County, it included territory which would later become township including present-day Plainsboro Township and Easton Township. On May 10th of that year, Morristown voted not to ratify a new Constitution because they felt it did not include mention of their right to own arms or be represented by an elected body such as themselves. In 1757, John Dickinson suggested that Morristown build a courthouse due to its location on Horsepen Hill outside of Philadelphia which at that time wasthe capital cityof America. After much discussion and deliberation among members of the town council and community militia unit called "The Pioneers", it was decided on December 3rd 1757 that a courthouse would be built but only if it could be funded by private donations rather then through taxes levied upon residents like those collected for road maintenance or street lighting etc.. By January 1st 1758 all fundraising efforts had ceased after just three donations totaling $2117 had been received from individuals throughout New Jersey! This represented an impressive turnaround for a small town with no tax base at this time! In 1814 William Sisler donated land south of Main Street (now Glasscock Road) near where South Union School now stands for use as public square; this donation formed what became known as Sisler Square today. In 1825 James Wetherbee donated two lots along West Fourth Street between Washington Avenue and Delaware Avenue - this donation formed what became known as Wetherbee Square today; also in 1825 James Witherbee donated another lot adjacent to his earlier donation on South Fourth Street between Delaware Avenue and Washington Avenue - this donation formed what became known as Witherbee Park today (although some say these lands may have been part of previous donations).
