Morristown is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,521 at the 2010 census. Morristown is the sixth most populous municipality in Morris County and the third largest city within its borders. The name "Morristown" comes from English meaning "town of meetinghouses." The first known permanent European settlers in what would become Morristown were Dutch families who arrived in 1675 and remained for about 20 years. They built a small farm on the east side of town near wherepresent-day Westfield shopping center is located. In 1719, two brothers by the name of Slocum bought land west of present-day Morristown and developed it into an agricultural community with homes, a school and mill; they named their new settlement Slocumville after themselves. In 1824, three men who had emigrated to America from England founded the towns of Hackensack (now Paramus), Jersey City and Bound Brook (now Ridgewood). They desired to create a separate society for their new arrivals that would be more democratic than those existing in each boroughs. This idea was rejected by NJ congressional leaders because they felt that such an effort would encourage more immigration rather than prevent it. The three founders then formed a company to purchase 1,200 acres (500 km²) north of Morristown on Monmouthshire Creek which became Bound Brook Township on December 12, 1825; this act created Morristown Township as well as all surrounding municipalities including Hackensack Township which had been organized earlier that year by combining parts of Bound Brook Township with Northumberland Township. During World War II, many American military personnel were stationed in and around Morristown during both world wars; during this time there was significant development taking place throughout the town including: expanded educational opportunities through Raritan Valley Regional School District; construction of Bridgeport Hospital; completion of First Union Bank building which now houses Morristorny Municipal Building; establishment of Bethlehem Steel Corporation plant nearby which produced components for bombers used over Europe during WWII including B-29s flown from nearby Elizabeth Air Force Base; etc.; these advances led to increased economic development throughout downtown MORRISTOWN resulting in increased population density as well as growth rates above national averages even while adjusted for inflation since 1945 In 1991, following passage of New Jersey's Homesteader's Bill allowing citizens to obtain government property outside their home county if they could demonstrate that they were using it primarily for agricultural purposes or other bona fide nonresidential uses such as housing or retail space - much like what has been done across much rural America since - Mayor Dick Pallone stated that "morrismontonians have always been able to count on us" when it came to celebrating special events such as statehood ceremonies or fairs ; this led eventually to incorporation into Bergen County along with neighboring municipalities Warrenpoint Borough (then called Mahwah), Dumont Borough (then called East Rutherford), Ramsey Borough (then called Plainsboro) and Vineland Borough (then called Milford).

John Smith in 1675 and he named it after his friend and backer Lord Oxford, who had died two years earlier in New England while exploring this area of New Jersey. In 1720, Governor Nicholas Myrick granted a charter to George Washington to establish a township under his command within present-day Morris Township. Washington's home at Holmdel became the first courthouse in what became Morristown Township when it was established on July 1, 1722. The original village of Morristown consisted of only about 100 homes scattered around a small square mile (3 km²). By 1800, however, over 2000 people lived in Morristowntownship alone – more than any other community within Morris County during this time period. During most of its early history as an agricultural community, Morristown grew rapidly due to its strategic location along Routes 476 and 804 which connected Philadelphia with Camden and Wilmington respectively; these highways made it easy for farmers to sell their products throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware into markets near Newark and Trenton NJ respectively. However, although Route 476 remains one of the main access routes into town today – providing residents with easy access to shopping mall areas such as Centenary Mall or PAEKcenter – development along Route 804 took hold beginning in the late 19th century leading eventually toMorris Town Hall being built on Main Street just east of Ulysses Road (now I-95) in 1892 followed by significant commercial development including Harbor View Oil Refinery (now part of PNC Bank), Shearson hydrogen station (now occupied by Santander bank), First Presbyterian Church building now used as Office Depot/Office Max (formerly Jiffy Lube), Bethlehem Steel Mill complex now owned by General Electric Company - all without prior planning or zoning consent from local citizens or government officials! In 1916 Bridgeport Steel Corporation relocated their production facilities from Sparrows Point upriver towards Edison where they would remain until closed down by American Bridge & Iron Works circa 1958 following plant closings throughout much of Northeast US due primarily to rivalry between GE and AIW over market share
