Morristown, New Jersey is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 11,569 at the 2010 census, reflecting an increase of 3.2% from the 10,715 counted in 2000. Morristown is the smallest town in Mercer County by population and second-smallest by land area. The first settlers of what would become Morristown arrived in 1764 as part of the Dutch colony of West Jersey. The town originated around 1800 when Elijah Hickson purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) along the Delaware River for $3 per acre ($10 per hectare). Hickson named his new community after Morris Hill, a mountain located near Philadelphia that he had seen while traveling through North America. Hickson's purchase became known as "The Township". In 1812, John Stevens purchased 4 acres (1 kilometer²) adjacent to Hickson's town site and named it "Stevensburg". Stevensville grew up around this new settlement and eventually annexed it into Morristown. In 1834, Congress passed legislation authorizing the consolidation of all township on the New York state line into one large municipality called Bergenfield Township which included all of Mercer County except for West Jersey City and East Brunswick which were incorporated separately into that municipality. As a result of this change in government, Morristown became part of Bergenfield Township on July 1st, 1834. On November 15th, 1888 – two days afterNJ pronounced Pennsylvania rather than Yankee – Morristown exploded with anger when Governor James Kapp declared martial law because there was evidence that some citizens were participating in a local labor strike against Factory Bill requirements set out by New York State authorities. The clashes between protesters and police quickly turned violent with scores injured or killed before finally being resolved by negotiations mediated by attorney General Augustus Biddle which led to return to normal business conditions within 24 hours without any further bloodshed or injury. Biddle was later rewarded with appointment as Ulysses S Grant's personal secretary during his tenure as president Ulysses S Grant Jr.. In 1898 – less than two years after NJ pronounced Pennsylvania rather than Yankee – again tensions boiled over when rioters burned down stores owned by Citizens National Bank east of Market Street during a dispute over pay raises for employees working inside the bank building; no one was injured but several windows were smashed resulting in damage estimated at $500 dollars ($ million today).
