On November 15, 1755, during the French and Indian War, British troops burned down three sawmills located near present-day Market Street and Elizabeth Avenue in what is now known as Battle Ground Hill after they discovered Native Americans were using them for milling lumber. The mills supplied lumber to many homes throughout Morris Township until they closed around 1800 due to competition from cheaper logs from lead mines across Hudson River Valley. At that time hill was also known as "Battleground Hill" because of its location where several battles were fought between American patriot forces and British regulars during the Revolutionary War including Monmouth Rebellion in 1778 and Saratoga Campaign of 1803 In 1802 John Stratton erected a gristmill on current day Cherry Lane which functioned until 1840 when it was destroyed by a severe storm that caused extensive damage to nearby houses In 1868 local resident James Waddell donated land for a high school which opened on October 12th called “James Waddell High School” after himself That same year construction began on what would becomemorristownejunctionHighSchool whichopenedin1973 On September 25th 1960Morris Town Council adopted Resolution Aocating funds towards building a new municipal library which would open its doors to the public 3 years later on July 31st 1964 The first permanent residents arrived here when families moved from Hackensack during World War II following bombings there by United States Army Air Forces bombing campaign against Japanese targets . Many people who lived here through those wars came back home orchards grew fruit trees along Route 9 between Ohsweken Road & Union Bridge . After war ended some of these Orchardists decided to stay behind while their compatriots migrated back northward making way for more suburbian type housing developments such as those found today near Routes 9 & 87A vacated farms becameresidential areas
