Morristown is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,331 at the 2010 census. Morristown is one of the oldest towns in New Jersey and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years. The first European to arrive in what is now Morristown was Dutchman Hendrick Vorster in 1682. In 1714, Englishman John Law arrived with his family and built a house on the present site of the Morristown Historic District. In 1833, Morristown became part of Bergen County after it was split from Essex County. It had a population of 7,702 at the 2000 census. On July 1, 1921, Morristown became a city when it merged with Easton to form what is now called Easton-Morris Township. In 1952, it regained its former status as a town when it merged with West Milford Township to form what is now called West Milford Borough. The town was named for General John Forbes (1757-1824), who fought against British forces during the American Revolution and afterward became an important leader in Republicanism in America. Forbes' grandson Alexander Forbes (1792-1868) donated land for what are today High School and Library buildings on Main Street; these structures were completed posthumously in 1833 by his son James Forbes (1800-1873). There have been several other philanthropists who have contributed to Morristown's development including Isaac Nourse ($10 million donation to create Park University), Haddon Snyder ($5 million gift which created Northjersey Community College), Julius Nyquist ($1 million gift which founded NJIT) and Dratel & Sons ($500 thousand gift which helped establish Rutgers University). According to the United States Census Bureau,[2] there are 21,331 people living in township as of 2010; 8 percent more than its 1999 population of 20,890 according to Census data but 3 percent less than its 2006 population of 23,673 according to official municipal records released by the township office late that night following an appeals process initiated by local media outlets challenging federal funding shortages due to budget cuts known as sequestration*. Morristown was first settled in 1682 by Dutch farmers, and became a township in 1709. The town's charter was granted on March 6, 1736. Morristown experienced growth during the Revolutionary War and after the war, with an increase in population from 1,500 to 12,000. In 1814, Morristown became an incorporated town. The population of Morristown had reached 20,000 by 1868 when it merged with Plainfield Township to form what is now Easton Township. During World War II, Morristown served as a military airbase for the United States Army Air Forces. After the war ended, the community experienced decline until it regained some of its former prominence as a center for manufacturing during the 1990s and 2000s.
