Morristown is a city in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,597 at the 2010 census. Morristown is the county seat of Morris County and home to the Morristown Federal Building and National Guard Armory. The City of Morristown was founded on November 4, 1800 by General John Woolridge as part of a relocation of military officers from Trenton due to the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted voting rights to citizens of slave states. At its peak in 1930, Morristown had a population of over 50,000 people. The area now called Morristown was first settled by Native Americans in pre-historic times. In 1614, forces led by Colonel George Monmouth invaded what is now Princeton Township and burned down several homes near today's downtown. The settlers who built their homes along what are now Third Street (now Route 322) were very early Amish farmers who grew corn and other vegetables for sale around town squares where they sold eggs or butter door-to-door. By 1800, many Germans had moved into Morris County from Pennsylvania and Delaware because they found land there affordable and good water supply accessible from points east through open space known as "the Great Lakes". They formed small villages with German names such as Eggersdorf (Egg Harbor), Schleicherstown (Scranton), Fritschville (Fitchburg), Weiserstadt (Weiserstown), Dukesburgh (Dover), Schwarzenbergtowne (Schwarzenberg). Some Amish families stayed behind after moving away from rural America; these families became known as "Borrego" people because their farmlands lay near Borrego Springs in southern Santa Barbara County, California. In 1802 when President James Ketchum designated Princeton Township as part of Morris County for single male Settlers only due to an influx of new arrivals following promises made during Andrew Jackson's term as president about creating more opportunities for American Indians living west of the Alleghenies River - including those living on Indian Reservations within present day Easton – no one applied for that designation since there were already townships established within Morris County! So Ketchum created two sets of township boundaries based on political considerations: one set would contain Princeton Township proper while the other would encompass all but two miles wide surrounding territory including parts now located in Sussex Borough and Passaic Borough – making it possible for this large group – mostly German speakers – to live side-by-side without feeling like they were underdogs just because they lived northwest of Trenton! This unspoken agreement between Ketchum & his colleagues lasted until 1861 when Congress passed an act establishing Westmorland Township instead! In 1838 local resident Amos Stroud detailed plans & designs for what would become today's downtown included buildings designed by Philadelphia architect Ebenezer Wigglesworth which include both commercial/residential spaces flanked by a public square measuring eighty feet × forty feet with a cast iron fence around it;[1] this plaza served as central business district until World War II when it was replaced by First Presbyterian Church across Market Streets which stillserving today (& recently renovated) as Newark Liberty University's Main Campus Gymnasium
Morristown was founded in 1695 by the Morristown Presbyterian Church. It became an incorporated town in 1837 and a city in 1912. The population of Morristown was 158,711 at the 2000 census.
