Morristown is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,974 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous municipality in Mercer County after Trenton and is the most populous municipality in the state of New Jersey. Morristown is located on the Delaware River east of Trenton and west of Paterson. The first Europeans to explore and settle this area were Dutch traders from Holland who entered into trade with the native peoples during The French and Indian War (1763-1765). In 1768, Colonel Sir George Washington traveled through Mercer County and named it for General James Morristown, 1st Baronet who had fought against France in that war. The town was founded on July 4, 1784 by Captain John Davenport as part of a larger land grant given to him by Governor Thomas Woodbury. On November 3rd of that year, Davenport renamed it for General James Morristown who had fought in the American Revolution against Great Britain. At its peak population in 1814, Morristown had a total population of over 25 thousand people. However by 1840 its population only reached 12 thousand people due to increased immigration from Ireland and other parts of Europe which caused much competition for available housing stock and jobs within the town limits. In 1857–1858, construction began on what would become known as "the greatest engineering achievement ever attempted on American soil", when engineers built an eight mile long railroad between Trenton and Morrisburg which became known as "Themorstown Railroad". This project led to new jobs for local residents and helped increase commerce within the community while creating new streetscape features such asHash marks or crosswalks along both sides of each track where trains passed through en route to different stations - making Morristown one of the most photographed communities during its time frame. However despite this successive development throughout early 20th century MorristOWN still suffered economically due to a decline in manufacturing activity throughout America during World War II which resulted in Littleton Industries closing their plant here in 1944; however unlike many municipalities across New Jersey pensioners still continue to receive government benefits until today making MORRISTOWN one of NJ's wealthiest towns by median household income!
Morristown was founded in 1755 by the Morristown Township Committee. The town was originally called Whitehall, but changed its name to Morristown in 1814 to honor General James G. Morrell, who had sold land in the township and served as its first mayor. In 1834, the township committee merged with Plainsboro Township to form Morris County. The county seat of Morris County moved from Whitehall to Morrisville in 1923.
