Morristown is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,711 at the 2010 census. Morristown was founded in 1795 and annexed by Newark in 1868. It is one of the oldest municipalities in New Jersey. Morristown has a rich history that can be traced back to its establishment as a small town on the east side of Newark Bay. In 1795, settlers from Great Britain arrived in what is now Morristown and established a small community called Netherfield on the north side of Newark Bay. The first post office was established in 1796, and the name of the community changed to Netherfield because it lay near Newark Bay. In 1802, Peter Cartwright erected a sawmill on the south side of Newark Bay and began manufacturing lumber for local residents. By 1800,NETHERFIELD had grown to include 10 homes and 30 businesses including mills, stores, and churches. In 1818, John Dickinson wrote an article entitled "A Plan for organizing New Jersey" which suggested that township form along lines similar to those currently used in Middlesex County (now Delaware). Because much of what is now Morris County was then part of Essex County (now parts of Pennsylvania), this plan received little attention at first but eventually became reality when New Jersey granted township status to all Of Essex County on February 11th, 1828 In 1868, after years of discussion and opposition from some within his own borough due to its smaller size relative to other municipalities within Morris County – including Newark – Mayor James Fenton petitioned for annexation by Pittsburgh due to its growing industriality and Railroad expansion into central Pennsylvania. On July 1st 1863 following approval from both municipalities – as well as from President Abraham Lincoln – Morristown formally became part of Pittsburgh with a population just over 2,000 people living within its borders at that time
Morristown was founded in 1732 by Nicholas Morrell. The town was named for Amos Morrell, the grandson of Nicholas Morrell. The first store in the town opened in 1750. In 1812, the Township of Morris was created from parts of township of Perth Amboy and township of Scotch Plains. The Township Seat was moved to Morristown from Perth Amboy on January 1, 1907. On May 25, 1917, the Borough of East Brunswick was created from portions of Morris Township and West Orange Township. The Borough seat is located in East Brunswick.
