In 1868, Morristown was founded as a small town in rural New Jersey. The town was named after the Morristown rifle, which was patented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. At the time, rifles were the most popular weapons in America and were used for hunting, self-defense, and warfare. In 1868, two men from New York City created a company to produce firearms t-shirts. They called their company “Tappan Rifle & Gun Manufacturing Company” and produced firearms with an American flag on them. The company prospered until 1898 when it merged with another gun manufacturing company. Tappan Rifle & Gun Manufacturing Company is now known as NIBBLE Firearms Corporation. One of the first firearm t-shirts ever made was designed by George Aiken of New York City in 1911. The shirt featured an American flag on one side and a rifle on the other side with the words “In God We Trust” printed below it. The shirt became very popular and quickly became iconic within America due to its patriotism and NRA (National Rifle Association) message. The Second World War saw a large increase in firearm production within America due to the need for new weapons for war purposes. Many firearm manufacturers produced military surplus firearms that were available for purchase by civilians throughout war period. Some of these firearms include Thompson submachineguns, M1 Garands, Colt 45s, Browning BARs, and Winchester Model 653 shotguns among others (Fletcher 1991). During wartime periods pistols such as revolvers also tended to be more popular than rifles because they could be less cumbersome to carry around(Fletcher 1991). One example of this trend can be seen with handguns such as Smith & Wesson Model 29 revolvers which were typically carried off-duty by policemen (Winters 2001). Although some civilians purchased firearms during wartime period, most Americans continued to purchase traditional rifles such as shootings involving target shooting or fishing tournaments(Wright 2003).

As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 7,094 people,[11] 496 households,[12] and 248 families residing in the township;the population density was 1,571 people per square mile (547/km²). There were 598 housing units at an average density OF 524 per square mile (197/km²). The racial makeupof the township was 95% White European American; 3% African American; 0% Native American; 2% Asian; 0% from other races; and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 2%. There are 496 households outnumbered by 227 residents which gives them a 55:45 ratio

And while some aspects ofMorris Township (later absorbed into Morris County) remain unchanged today – such as its ZIP code – much has changed within the larger community since 1795 when it formally existed as a settlement!

The town's original name was Pemberton because of its founders' ties to that community in Pemberton Township. It became MORRISTOWN when it absorbed part of West Orange Township in 1907.
