Morristown is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,651 at the 2010 Census. Morristown is the county seat of Morris County. It was founded in 1795 as a result of the merger of three separate towns: Bethlehem Township, East Brunswick Township and Westmorland Township. The name Morristown comes from Dutch for " mouth of the Monmouth River ". The first settlement in what is now Morristown occurred on May 26, 1795 when three independent farmers named John Cramer, Nicholas Putnam and Abraham Rigdon landed on Shipwreck Island (now known as Fishdam Island) and started to trade with local Indians. By 1800, there were 10 families living in what is now Morristown. In 1814, James Ritchie built a mill on the river near where it currently stands. In 1825–26, Henry Woodward erected a dam across the Monmouth River which caused extensive flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses in what is now downtownMorris County. The resulting $20 million flood damage was repaired by using federal money provided through the Works Progress Administration (WPA). In 1881–82, work began on building a new courthouse located adjacent to Woodberry Avenue across from present-day Borough Hall Park. The original courthouse was completed in 1886 but due to its location on Third Street behind City Hall it did not become operational until 1912 after several renovations and additions including an addition of an underground garage capable of housing up to 400 cars. The borough formed from portions of Morris Township on November 3rd 1914 following an act by the New Jersey General Assembly which merged all six municipalities comprising Morris Township into one entity pursuant to then state law governing municipal mergers reviewed by then Governor Augustus Mifflin under section 2(a) of the State Government Organization Law (27 NJ Reg No: 129).
