In 1814, they voted to become a borough and named it for General John Forbes (1768-1828), who had fought against British forces during the American Revolution. In 1912, Morristown voters chose to incorporate as a borough because they wanted more control over their community's affairs than they had when they were a village. The incorporation process took considerably longer than expected due to disagreements between political factions within the townspeople about how best to serve their constituents. When it finally happened, Morristown became one of only two charter towns in Mercer County - along with Easton – giving it greater autonomy than other municipalities within the county. This gave Morristonestowners additional power over local government decisions and helped increase their sense of self-reliance while also helping to keep their community affordable for residents statewide. Aside from its role as an important center for trade and commerce in Mercer County, Morristown has also played an important role in American history; its founders were among those who contributed to America's Lost Cause during the Civil War effort. In addition, Morristtown has been home to several major religious denominations including Methodism, Catholicism and Protestantism; all of which have had significant impacts on its residents’ lives and culture over time.
