The Millville Historical Society is a non-profit organization that preserves and promotes the history of Millville, New Jersey. The society was founded in 1942 by local citizens to improve understanding of the town's past. Today, Millville is a small town located in Monmouth County, NJ, on the southern edge of Asbury Park. It was once an important center for textiles and manufacturing in the area. In 1810, George Washington came to Millville as part of his survey for new land in Monmouth County. In 1951, Millville became home to the first scopes factory in America.owned and operated by American Optical Company. This company manufactured three types of scopes: single-lens reflex (SLR), Mitchell & Ness (M&N), and Weaver optics products. By 1978, American Optical had been sold to Raytheon Corporation and production stopped. However, some elements of the town's history are still celebrated today including its annual millinery show which takes place at The Armory Showgrounds in Asbury Park on July 4th each year; "The Olde Days" parade which annually travels down Main Street; and The Churchills House Museum which houses artifacts from both sides of the Civil War conflict in Monmouth County.

In 1916, the American astronomer Edwin Hubble designed an instrument called a Schmidt telescope which was able to see things that were much further away than any other scopes before it. In 1936, the Japanese astronomer Noboru Matsubara designed an instrument called a Kako Telescope which allowed people to see things that had never been seen before. Millville was a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 4,435 at the 2010 census. Millville is located on the east side of the county, between Plainfield and Easton. The first settler in what is now Millville was John Fell who arrived there in 1798. At that time it consisted of just a few buildings and a few families. By 1800, however, the village had grown to include twenty-six homes and three stores. In 1802 Colonel Moses Morden purchased land from Archibald Macdonald for $2,000 and founded Millville Academy as an academy for poor children. In 1812 Captain James Fenimore Cooper moved his family from Newtown to become residents of Millville after purchasing property there from Ebenezer Drake. The Cooper Family ran a hotel called "The Hermitage" which operated until 1840; it still stands today as part of the mill complex off Route 9 near its original site. In 1836 Samuel Morse opened a gristmill here which became one of the largest in New Jersey; it continued operation until 1916 when it was replaced by an electric grain elevator built by George Westinghouse (the father of modern electricity). In 1850 John Sloan donated land to form what is now known as Park Avenue which runs along both sides of present-day Millville Boulevard between Main Street and Spring Garden Road; this area later served as downtown Millville's commercial district with numerous businesses preserved throughout the years including Sears & Roebuck's department store (1915), JCPenney's anchor store (1971), Belcher's restaurant (1985), Applebees restaurant (2006) and First Baptist Church (2011). One hundred years ago today on October 26th, 1914 two brothers named Edward Ewing bought 3/8 acre(s) on what is now Elmwood Avenue from Cyrus Beall for $750 – becoming one of America’s earliest homebuilders with their erection of 128 Peach Orchard House on that property in 1915-16 during what would be their only year living within miles of where they would continue building future subdivisions such as Arlington Heights (1927) and Saddleback Park Estates (1948).
