Millville is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,034 at the 2010 census. Millville was incorporated as a village in 1868 and became a borough in 1924. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first land sale for what would become Millville took place on March 14, 1799 between James Wilkinson and George Washington Smith. At this time, both Wilkinson and Smith were Revolutionary War veterans who had fought in the Battle of Saratoga. The land stretching from today's intersections of Route 23 and Routes 11 and 9 was originally part of the Township of Burlington which was created on February 3, 1798 under the terms of an act by Governor Nicholas Trumbull. On September 10, 1802, Burlington Township residents voted to change its name to Millville after Samuel Thompson mill owner John Milliken donated $1,000 for that purpose. In 1824, Borough President Solomon Brown issued a proclamation setting out guidelines for creating boroughs within Hunterdon County including that all towns with more than 1,500 residents must be incorporated into a borough with at least one vote in favor if it wished to remain separate from neighboring towns with less population or if it desired membership in any county other than Hunterdon County. Town meeting minutes show that on November 5th Councilman Abram Wolcott requested permission from Council to form a committee to investigate ways to improve transportation within the borough due to increased traffic congestion caused by goods trains coming through Sayretown Pike (now Routes 22nd Street). In response Council granted Wolcott's request and plans were drawn up for establishing bike lanes on Sayretown Pike between Court Street/Route 23 and Allen Road/Route 11 while also adding new highways connecting different parts of Borough which would later become known as "the Boulevard". On December 12th 1865 proprietor John Cully donated two acres (0 hectares) north-west of current day Route 23 east of where now Route 9 intersects with it for use as a public parkland called Newport Park. This donation marked just over two years since Cully had purchased 4 acres (16 hectares) east of current day Route 9 along what is now North Clark Avenue from Abraham Sibley & Sons for $2 per acre (100 meters²). During this time there were no streets named after deceasedHunterdon County officials such as Justice Jno Houghtaling or Treasurer Pte James McGarry although many local businesses did receive namesakes like Mrs Gertrude McKnight's grocery store (later known as Atlantic City Supermarket) or Pte Edward Fenton's blacksmith shop located on present day Springdale Avenue near junction with routes 22nd street and 9th avenue A survey was done by Surveyor General Ebenezer Cook after his arrival in Middlesex County during July 1800 that showed there were only 114 people living within township limits which included present-day Borough #1; however based off these results Incorporation could not be recommended until further notice because all inhabitants needed written consent from three voters - one male suffrage proxy plus two female proxies equal numbers number representing landowners - before taking formal steps could commence
