In 1916 local residents successfully petitioned to have their own independent township formed out of parts of Union County with promises by then-Mayor Wm Halsey to build them a new high school if they approved; this led to the erection by 1928 of what eventually became known as Maple Shade Elementary School which still stands today within sight of both local businesses near Main Street and also offers some degree level education services adjacent to its front steps!
