It became an incorporated municipality on April 15, 1876. The milltown name comes from the gristmill which operated in the early 1800s and still does today. The first mill in Millville was built by Nicholas Mill between 1798 and 1800. This mill produced flour for local bread shops and other local residents as well as export to Pennsylvania and New York City. In 1836, Nicholas' grandson John built a second mill which increased flour production to meet demand from nearby farmers and consumers alike. By 1840, there were three mills in operation producing over 1 million pounds of flour each month! In 1850, a fourth mill was added to the mix – this one located on Route 9 near present-day State College Avenue (now called Rte 47). This new mill soon became known as “the giant” due to its size and its ability to produce high-quality flour that could be sold throughout New Jersey and beyond. In 1870, another addition made it possible for Millville residents to purchase their own water supply – making it possible for them to become self-sufficient within their community! Throughout its history, the mills have been an important part of what has made Millville such a unique place – providing jobs for locals as well as helpingto support the economy of its small town core. Today’s mills continue to play an important role in the community with their continued production of flour, paper products, insulation materials and more. In addition, many members of the community continue work at hometown businesses including restaurants/cafés/bars/motels etc., giving rise to what can only be called “The Village” atmosphere! Millville was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. It was located on the east side of Millville Mountain, about southeast of Branchburg and northwest of Glassboro. The population was 1,217 at the 2000 census. The first settler in Millville was George Hickey in 1795. In 1802, Elijah White developed what is now the southern edge of Millville Township. In 1807, John Dickinson built a gristmill on the Delaware River near what is now South Main Street. By 1830, there were fourteen businesses in Millville with a total payroll of $1,000. In 1838-39, when an act was passed to create Mercer County, portions of Millville Township were included within it as well as parts of Glassboro and Dunellen Counties to the north and west. In 1840-41 mill owners James Mapes and Ezekiel Weeden sold their land comprising present day Millvale Township to Samuel Livingston for $10 per acre (about £4). Livingston engaged local builders to erect three mills: one at Indian Head Creek (now called Easton Avenue), one near what is now Broad and North streets (near where Pennsbury Road ends), and one at the headwaters of Delaware River near what is now West Side Drive. A fourth mill – known as "The Gristmill" – probably did not exist but may have been located on Pine Street between Eighth Street and Ninth Street in today's town center next to First United Methodist Church building which dates from 1865-66 when it replaced an earlier log structure that burned down in 1857-58. According to some sources the first post office established at MillVILLE was named "Branchburg", but this name appears only on maps from 1860 until after 1901; by then it had become "Millvale". According to other sources "Millvale" began receiving mail starting around 1800 although there seems no evidence that any outpost ever received its own postal service before 1861; post office officials originally reported that branchburg served all eight towns in Mercer County exceptGlassboro which they considered part of Dunellen County or even Orange county since both counties had been formed following New Jersey's admission into the Union on November 14th, 1814 - more than two months after Lancaster became Mercer county's capital city! Thereafter especially Branchburg began receiving mail from Etna (northwest glassboro) via truckloads hauled by horsedrawn wagons reaching upriver every couple days during summertime! Some residents still traveled overland byfoot during those days! The first school opened for students grades K through 8th grade on October 3rd1842 just south of where present day Second Baptist Church stands off BroadStreet today!
