Middlesex is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,076 at the 2010 census. Middlesex was first settled in 1708 by English colonists as part of the North American colonization of that time period. The name derives from the old English word "midsummer" which means "in summer." The township was formed on March 14, 1834 from portions of Essex and Sussex townships. On February 28, 1847, it became a borough after voters passed an act to that effect. Borough form ceased to be effective on April 16, 1951 when Township status reverted back to individual townships within the county. Middlesex is located in the New York metropolitan area and is bordered by Passaic to the north and east, Uniontown to the south-central portion of town, Newark Liberty International Airport to the west and Paterson to the northwest. It has a total area of , making it one of NJ's smallest municipalities at just over 2 square miles (5 km2). Middlesex's economy is centered around its service sector with heavy concentrations in manufacturing (particularly textiles), professional services (lawyers and physicians) and government support functions such as education; however there are also some areas with strong agricultural roots including eggs for commercial production or Agricultural Research Center land for horticulture research. The township was formed on March 14th 1834 from parts of Essex and Sussex Townships residents voted overwhelmingly in favor creating an entity specifically for their needs - this act saw development of what would become known as Middlesex Township Park District #1 which still governs much Municipal function today! On February 28th 1847 following passage by both houses of New Jersey’s Legislature An Act To Establish A Borough In This Township Was Ratified & Approved By Vote Of The People And Allowed For Elected Officers Onlythose Who resided In The Borough At The Time Of Its Forming Are Appointed (& No longer Required To Attend Meetings). As per Article VIII Section 1 Of Our Constitution These Officers Were To Be: Mayor/Aldermen & Justices Of Peace...& Such Other Officers As May Be appointed By Law
In 1664, Middlesex was chartered as a township by the Dutch West India Company. The first residents of Middlesex were those who had fled persecution in the Netherlands. The township was named for the medieval county of Essex, England. In 1802, Middlesex became a part of New Jersey and was divided into two counties: Hunterdon County to the east and Burlington County to the west.
