Middlesex is a borough in New Jersey, located on the border of Middlesex County and Union County. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 56,711. The name comes from Middlesex Abbey in England. The first Europeans to visit what is now Middlesex were Dutch traders who came ashore in 1664 for trade purposes. They named the bay after Sir Nicholas Solent, 1st Baronet (1580–1646), an English statesman and explorer who had been sent by King James I of England to explore parts of America. In 1672, John Woolridge explored what would become Middlesex County and named it for his home county of Suffolk in England; local residents still refer to him as "John Woolridge." Middlesex was incorporated as a borough on March 14, 1814, from portions of Union and Middlesex Counties. The incorporation represented one-seventh of all the land area within New Jersey at that time. At its peak in 1828, Middlesex had a population of over 100,000 people and boasted more than 200 businesses! However, by 1830 it had shrunk to only 30 households with a population density under 2 per square mile! In 1832-1833 three successive mayors – Edward Everett Hale (1810-1835), Timothy Chandler (1800-1886) and Martin Van Buren (1782-1837) – each made significant contributions to civic life in Middlesex through their aggressive street cleaning campaigns which helped stimulate economic growth during this period. After emancipation all white men were required to serve five years military service before becoming citizens; however black men continued to be enlisted into militia units until 1865 when they were finally granted full citizenship rights. In 1862 Union General George McClellan ordered his army out of Philadelphia under cover of night while American forces across Pennsylvania prepared for battle at Gettysburg; striking toward Trenton Bridge near Princeton he learned about Confederate forces encamped there under Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ewell which compelled him orders not to cross Ford’s Creek without heavier armor or artillery support – an order that has been cited as one reason why Grant failed catastrophically at Gettysburg two days later. A large force consisting mainly infantry crossed Ford’s Creek bridge but was driven back by both Union cavalry and rifle fire from entrenched Confederate positions further downstream whereupon McClellan called off the attack “in view thereof I desisted from further prosecution” despite severe losses among his own troops including 7 generals killed or wounded including himself!!! This episode is sometimes called “The Battle Of Princeton” although no decisive victory resulted.]

Middlesex is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,171 at the 2010 census. Middlesex was formed on April 3, 1846 from portions of Rahway and South Amboy Township. It was named for George Washington Middlesex and because of its location in the heart of the old Dutch colony of New Netherland it has been called "The Birthplace of America". The first European settlers in what is now Middlesex were French Huguenots who arrived in 1664. They built Fort Christina on what is now Livingston Avenue and founded the town of Rahway which they named for their home country. English colonists arrived later that year and founded the township of South Amboy which became Middlesex after they won an election to join forces with Amboy Township to form a new county. The initial boundaries included parts of Rahway and East Brunswick while only part of East Brunswick was annexed by Middlesex as part of the larger city of Newark. Middlesex did not become a municipality until 1907 when it was incorporated by an act passed by both houses of the New Jersey Legislature as a result of a referendum backed by Governor John Denton. At this time it consisted primarilyof rural farmland surrounding Newark with some small towns located within its boundaries such as West Stockton and North Caldwell
Middlesex County was formed on March 20, 1755 from portions of Bergen and Essex Counties. The county has a population of over 205,000 people today. Middlesex County is one of the most densely populated counties in New Jersey.
