Middlesex is a borough in New Jersey, located in the Middlesex County region. The population was 3,316 at the 2010 census. Middlesex has been part of the New York metropolitan area since its creation in 1993. The name "Middlesex" is derived from English meaning "a peninsula on the north bank of the river Meuse", which had been part of Dutch East India Company territory since 1624 and would have been named after one of their early governors, Sir John Middleton. The first mention of what we now call Middlesex County was by Ptolemy in his Geography (c. 100 BC), who divided it into three parts: Ilfracombe, Teignmouth and Southwark; but no doubt he got this information from Strabo, who says that it was originally called Cimmeria (i.e., Germany). In 1732, when George Washington was elected President of America, he lived for a time near Princeton and took advantage of Carpenters' Hall being available for lodging purposes on West Street between Second and Third Streets where he spent many nights before going to Congress at Philadelphia. When Carpenters' Hall burned down in 1814-1815, Washington used another building on that site which still stands -today's United States Capitol Building- as his headquarters until 1799 when he moved to Mount Vernon House on Capitol Hill. George Washington also owned land west of Princeton including what is now Hackensack Avenue which served as an contiguous parkland stretching all the way to Rahway Township and beyond until township boundaries were extended eastward in 1860 by act of Assembly. This grant covered an area that included most or all present-day Middlesex Township forms Hunterdon County as well as portions of Uniontown and Caldwell counties west thereof including Rahway Township eastward to Watervliet Creek; indeed Hackensack Avenue became known locally as 'Washington Boulevard'. As part of this granteeship process certain restrictions were placed upon future landowners such as not making any addition to their holdings without prior consent from those granted ownership rights thereby preserving much valuable open space within our township limits for generations to come! Ulysses S Grant owned large tracts adjacent to Newark Liberty International Airport outside Of Newark so his house & estate can still be seen today just off exit 134A Rte 9 southbound towards Newark Airport
Middlesex County was formed on April 14, 1807 from portions of Burlington County. The county seat is Newark. Middlesex includes the towns of East Brunswick, Princeton, Rahway and West Orange. In 1831, the counties were consolidated into one entity under the name of New Jersey.
