Middlesex County was formed on March 14, 1788, from portions of Hunterdon and Union counties. Middlesex is one of the most densely populated counties in New Jersey and home to some of the most vibrant metropolitan areas in the United States. The county is named for Sir John Chandos, 1st Baronet (1684-1726), an English gentleman who served as a magistrate and member of Parliament. Middlesex was originally part of Bergen County, but became its own entity following a split in 1847. The county seat is Newark, which has been its largest city since 1917. The area that would become Middlesex County was first settled by Native Americans dating back to pre-Columbian times. In 1692, English colonists arrived in what is now Middlesex County and began building homes and farms around what is now Newark. By 1728, the population of Newark had grown to over 10,000 people—a number that would continue to grow until it reached 25,000 by 1800. In 1788, when New Jersey was created as a state within the United States, Middlesex became one of the original nine counties located in the new state. Its rich agricultural history can be found throughout its borders; much like present-day New Jersey, early Middlesex was heavily influenced by Dutch culture with many farmers specializing in growing corn and other grains due to their lack of access to foreign goods. Middlesex’s growth continued through several waves of immigration during the 19th century; this included Irish refugees fleeing famine conditions during Ireland’s Potato Famine (1845-49). As NJ grew increasingly diverse both racially and culturally during this time period there were also more opportunities for immigrants to settle in Middlesex County than anywhere else in New Jersey at that point. This increased diversity has helped make today’s Cumberland Township one ofNJ’s most diverse neighborhoods – home to people from all over North America as well as Europeans living among Americanized natives/descendants! The area now known as Middlesex County was originally part of the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1764, when New Jersey became a U.S. state, Middlesex County was included in the new province. The county seat was Newark, which is still its current location.
