The Middlesex County Rifle Association was formed in 1853, and it has been a part of the NRA ever since. The rifle association helped to establish the first shooting range in Middlesex County, and they also provided instruction in firearms to local citizens. In 1886, the NRA opened its own training school, which is still functioning today. The rifle association also donated land for a public park in 1892.
Middlesex County, New Jersey is a county located in the northeastern United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 66,779. The county seat is Paterson and its largest city is Newark. Middlesex County was created on December 14, 1814 from portions of Essex and Union Counties. It was named for Sir John Moore's estate in Monmouthshire, England. Middlesex has a total area of 24 square miles (61 km2). The region that now makes up Middlesex County was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1688, English colonists arrived and began to settle what would become Middlesex County. The early settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, peas and other vegetables near their homes. By 1800, these people had developed into a large town-owning class with some 300 families living in seven villages: Elizabethtown (now Morristown), East Brunswick Township (now Plainfield), West Brunswick Township (now Glassboro), East Rutherford Township (now Freehold), South Brunswick Township (now Hightstown) and Rahway. They also had several mills which produced flour, cloth and paper products until those days were replaced by electric power plants in the 20th century. In 1814, after surveying all of New Jersey as part of his land grant to George Washington from France pursuant to the Louisiana Purchase Act of1803, Sir John Moore set out from Britain on horseback to survey all of North America east of Mexico City including what are now Middlesex County and Ocean Counties including Delaware Bayou as well as parts of Bergen Peninsula and Hudson Valley which he named Monmouthshire Collegiate School District No 1 following his purchase therefrom on October 22nd that year with an appropriation made under Public Law 2 Stimulus Bill 123 by then Ulysses S Grant authorizing such expenditures not exceeding one thousand five hundred dollars ($1 500). He returned via Kingston upon Hull England on November 10th having covered over 25 miles riding 11 hours at full gallop covering 102 miles non-stop covering 7 months at 5 mph which he termed "the fastest ride ever accomplished unassisted." On November 12th he left Kingston upon Hull for Windsor taking along with him his horses baggage plus provisions for 400 head of cattle 4 hogsheads cask wine & 50 bushels potatoes & 100 pounds beeswax candles & 600 gallons whiskey etc., giving effect to Royal Warrant dated October 15th 1796 from James Ketchum Esq., Deputy Surveyor General for Canada & Labrador being appointed Thereupon Acting Surveyor General for North Americaexcluding Newfoundland where no act or regulation hath been passed restraining mayish Settlers henceforward coming into this Province except through proper channels approved by Congress...the whole route being within 3 leagues or thereaboutsof each Other side open country without woods or rivers beyond the limits hereinbefore mentioned it appeared very necessary that a man should be sent forthwith thenceinelveseither Collector general or adjutantgeneral select unto carry into Execution this warrant under whose direction I am Accordingly making application...the same having been transmitted hereto my lord Jeffery Amherst Esq., Lieut.-Governor— This document shows how much importanceSir JohnMoore placed on surveys during his time as deputy surveyor general for Canada/Labrador- still today important decisions about land boundaries are made based on these types of surveys
