Metuchen, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,273 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Metuchen Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The first European settler in Metuchen was Nicholas Montresor who arrived by boat from Holland in 1664. He and his wife Mary founded a small settlement on the banks of the Delaware River opposite what is now known as Point Pleasant Township. In 1701 John Nicholson moved to what is now Metuchen from Burlington County with his family and began developing land around present-day Main Street and Market Streets. By 1709 Nicholson had erected a millrace that ran northwest to south through present-day Metuchen before turning east for about . This single stream formed the basis for modern farming operations in this area today. In 1725, Matthew Decker bought from Nicholas Montresor three lots adjoining that of Nicholas's original plot on which he built an additional house and mill dam (now part of Princeton University). On these lands were increased production of corn and other grains until 18th century when those areas were developed into townships such as Mercer and Sussex; however, all manufacturing stayed within township boundaries until after World War II when it expanded into suburban sprawl across much of Northeast Pennsylvania due to wartime demand for munitions factories throughout America. According to the United States Census Bureau, Metuchen has a total area of , including , of which is land and (2%) is water. As of the census results shown in2010, there are 23,273 people living in Metuchen Township: 20% White American citizens (non-Hispanic), 78% Black or African American citizens (non-Hispanic), 2% Native American citizens (non-Hispanic), 1% Asian Americans

Metuchen, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the town had a population of 26,878 and was the 9th-most populous municipality in New Jersey. The name Metuchen is derived from Middle Dutch met'ucche or "meeting place". The first settler in Metuchen was Nicholas d'Angell who arrived on March 10, 1711 with his family from England. His brother Peter also settled here about that time. George Washington and his cabinet were briefly based at an inn called the Crane House while they were awaiting passage to Trenton. The American Revolution started HERE! On September 17, 1777 General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga Springs after three weeks of hard fighting against British forces under General Howe. In recognition of this event and as a sign of independence for our country’s capital city (New York City), Congress erected a large stone plaque in downtown Metuchen which reads “In Memory Of The Fallen At Saratoga”. On February 14th 1814 Union troops burned down the old schoolhouse located at 223 Main Street which served as their headquarters during the Siege of Fort Delaware during the War for Independence. That same year James Kapptock built one of America’s first steamboats known as Kapptock’s ferryboat service running between Batavia Ferry Landing (now Princeton) on Lake Erie and Newark waterfront docks until 1876 when it became part of NJ Transit's system transporting passengers across river systems in NJ & PA
Metuchen was founded in 1719 by John Metuchen. The town became a borough in 1846. It was incorporated as a city in 1904.
