Metuchen, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,896 at the 2010 census. The area of Metuchen was taken from South Amboy Township to form the town of Metuchen by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on July 1, 1868. The first settler in what would become Metuchen was Nicholas Beale who arrived in 1772. Beale's family continued to live there until 1800 when they moved to Bordentown and then again to Metuchen where they remained until 1807. In that year, John Pennell settled in what would become Metuchen and built his home on land he had bought from Nicholas Beale. Pennell would remain in control of the land for over 50 years and it is said that he never sold it off or changed its use. On October 7, 1776 during the American Revolutionary War, Virginius Conte surrendered at Ridgefield Heights after a long siege of Fort Lee with his forces under British General Howe leading the way. Nearly 2 centuries later on November 11th 1954 when Beatrice Hahn became Mayor of Metuchen following her election as unconfirmedly first female Mayor of NJ, she became one of just two women ever elected as mayors in this UPN state (the other being Eleanor Holmes Norton). In 1849-1850 surveyors started mapping out townships within Mercer County which included much part of what is now Middlesex County; however their surveying didn’t take into account what would be called “Metuchenden Township” since this area lay east of Bordentown Swamp. On March 5th 1850 James Fenton convened a meeting chaired by Judge George Nethersole which resulted in creating “Metuchenden Township” from parts of South Amboy and West Orange Twps.. This makes sense because “metucehan” means swampy ground or meadow - perfect for farming!* Streams running through these areas today were so important for providing water resources for farming that roads still run parallel today between these areas and Manchester/Newark – making commuting easy even today!* After about 10 years due to variousabulous changes taking place throughout Mercer County including railroads coming along (mercer county experienced rapid growth during this time) new legislation was passed by the state legislature on July 1st1968 consolidating all township boundaries into one!! This made Metuchen our official town name!* * Note: According to some sources “metucehan” may also derive from an English word meaning "to cover" or "to fortify."

Metuchen is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,812 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous municipality in Middlesex County after Somerville and the most populous municipality in Essex County. The first European settlers arrived in Metuchen Township on February 17, 1800 by boat from what is now Greenwich Village, Connecticut. They were led by Captain John Stevens of Saybrook Colony. The town's namesake comes from George Washington's home port of Mount Vernon and its location as part of that estate's barrier island on the southern tip of Long Island Sound: "the hunter met with his prey on one side of the sound and an American settlement was founded on the other." The township was formed on November 3, 1814 when Morris and Essex counties were split into two parts based on their then-counterparts' lines joining Burlington to the east and Camden to the west. The original boundaries included all of what are now Parsippany Township (to its north), Cedar Grove Township (to its northeast), Amboy Township (to itssouthwest), Harrisonburg Borough (to itssouthwest), Medford Borough (to itsnorthwest) and West Milford Borough (toitsnorthwest). On April 14, 1868, portions of Harrisonburg Borough were merged into Medford borough; this event caused Metuchen to be reincorporated as a borough on December 12th that year. The median age was 44 years. 9% of residents were under the age of 18; 5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 20% were from 25 to 44; and 30% were from 45 to 64.
