Metuchen is a borough in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a total population of 382 people. The name Metuchen is derived from Middle Dutch "METOEKHEN" meaning "middle place". The arrival of Europeans in this area began with the French and Indian War (1755-1763). Fort Mercer was built on what is now Seneca Street by Colonel James Clinton in 1767. In 1777, George Washington's army passed through Metuchen during their campaign against France. In 1834, Metuchen became part of Bergen County when it was organized. It was incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1875. On January 1, 1980, it became a township after being divided from Bergen Township. The Metuchen Burnett Playground opened in 1931 and has been used by children ever since as well as adults for ball games and other activities such as theatrical shows and concerts. Additionally, the Park Service operates the Brookside Branch Library which is located within walking distance of both playgrounds as well as many businesses along Route 9 including an ice cream parlor and post office which remain open until 8pm weekdays and 10pm Saturdays and Sundays; also available are video rentals or internet access at the library’s computers during normal hours without having to leave the building

Today, Metuchen is known for its vibrant arts scene and its diverse history; it is home to several museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art (which opened in 1913), The Newark Museum (opened in 1974), and Rutgers University's Woodbridge Campus museum (opened in 1984).
