When put into operation on July 4th that year as part of his "Federal Road" program – which aimed to improve transportation within central America – this purchase proved fortuitous for future development as it allowed Washington to build roads not only through Bergen County but also into Princeton and Trenton proper. In 1831–32 Moses Burnham donated land northeast and east of current day Main Street to become what would later be called Burnham Park; this area included much today's Downtown Metuchen section as well as areas near Woodrow Wilson High School and across South Street from present day Weequahic Airport. In 1862 John Pemberton donated land extending south from Main Street onto Killingly Beach for eventual incorporation into Borough status under then-Borough President James Kappelman; this area became known today as Ridgewood Heights.
