The name Metuchen comes from the ancient French word "mettre" meaning "to put together." The first European settlement in Metuchen was by Giovanni da Verrazzano on July 14, 1524. He named the site Noltego and built a small fortification to protect himself and his colonists against attack from Native Americans. In 1664, John Woolridge founded the first white school in Middlesex County when he opened a school on the corner of Grove Street and Market Street in what is now East Orange Township. In 1737, Colonel George Washington moved his family to Metuchen after winning an election as President of America with only 22 votes out of more than 2 million cast. They were followed by other families who settled in Metuchen over the next several years including those of Congressman James Kepner (1820-1901) and Commodore David Dixon (1827-1912), both signers of the Declaration of Independence. In 1848, Bethel Presbyterian Church was organized as one of three denominations established within Rutgers University's new college division which became known as Rutgers College; this church would later merge into Princeton University. After Rutgers departed for Princeton in 1854, Methodist Episcopalians took over Bethel until 1860 when they merged with Congregationalists to form Universalistism; this church would later merge into Baptistism before becoming Pentecostalism today. After the war ended, many factories closed down and Metuchen lost some retail jobs but regained some industrial ones through various redevelopment efforts over the years.
