The first gun target in Metuchen, New Jersey was a blacksmith shop at 238 Main Street. The original target was made of wood and installed on the property of the then-Village School Board. In 1851, Metuchen's first rifle range opened at 124 Second Avenue. A two-day trial shooting event took place on October 21st and 22nd, 1851. In 1865, Metuchen became home to its own rifle range which operated until 1907. In 1893, a new rifle range was built east of town on State College Boulevard. The course met with success and saw regular use byMetuchen residents until it closed in 1948. In 1951, Metuchen hosted its very own NRA Annual Meeting & Exhibits which drew over 1,000 participants from around the state of New Jersey. Metuchen, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,506 at the 2010 Census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Metuchen" comes from a Lenape word meaning "place where buffalo grazed." The first settler in Metuchen was James Weldon who arrived in 1786. By 1812 most of what is now Metuchen had been taken over by the Township of East Brunswick and its successor municipalities until it was consolidated with Newark in 1881. As an incorporated municipality from 1881 to 1923, Metuchen had one mayor and four council members; however these were increased to six mayors with two council members each from 1965 to 1983; however all six mayors were also chief executive officers or trustees of their respective municipalities before becoming Mayor of Metuchen again effective 1 January 2009. In 1987 the Borough Council passed a resolution recommending that the borough be merged into Newark but this recommendation was not acted upon until after Sweeney's victory as mayor in the general election held on November 3, 1997 which resulted in him being re-elected without running against any candidates having received more than 50% of the vote statewide. On December 5th, 2013 following months of public outcry over meeting irregularities during his term as Mayor including his refusal to release minutes/audits he resigned abruptly effective immediately as did his predecessor Pat Russo hours after admitting guilt for corruption charges levied against him by state Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Since taking office Sweeney has made many changes such as increasing transparency within municipal government through releasing all emails and minutes from meetings even though he has refused to do so when questioned about them by reporters on several occasions

Metuchen, New Jersey is a town located in the Bergen County of New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern border of Middlesex County and is bordered by Union Township to the north, Livingston Township to the east, Passaic Junction to the south and Westwood Borough to the west. The first Europeans to visit Metuchen were two Dutch soldiers who landed there on October 5, 1670 during their expedition against English forces in what became known as the Battle of Long Island. In 1701 Governor John Moore established a trading post at Metuchen Creek which served as a base for trade with both Europe and North America. The first school in Metuchen was established in 1734. During its early years it was an agricultural village with only a few buildings constructed outside of cultivation or use as stores or homes. In 1814-1815 Major General George Washington's army invaded New Jersey during his campaign through that state into Pennsylvania; after crossing from Delaware River into Monmouth County he found himself besieged at Trenton by Confederates under General Howe. After three days of fighting reinforcements arrived from Philadelphia but were too late to save Washington and his army which surrendered on October 13th; four days later General Howe abandoned Trenton without battle and withdrew across Monmouth county towards Princeton where he joined up with King George III's army en route back home across Pennsylvania. A series of fur traders founded settlements along Upper Metuchen Creek between 1735 and 1817; these communities included Dover (1735), Hackensack (1736), Clifton (1737), Perth Amboy (1738) and Batavia (1800). These people were primarily interested in exploiting natural resources such as timber and minerals rather than engaging in commerce or agriculture. By 1800 most of these settlements had been abandoned due to lack of interest or competition from rivals farther down Upper Metuchen Creek corridor including Toms River Landing near Mount Laurel, Paterson Landing near Sayreville and East Rutherford on Staten Island which had developed more vigorously since European settlement began there some thirty years earlier. Afterward much economic decline followed throughout this portion of Middlesex County until American industry emerged beginning around World War II when manufacturing plants began arriving from Utica, New York City as well as other parts of northern NJ bringing new life to many villages along Upper Metuchen Creek corridor including Metuchen itself following incorporation into Bergen County in 1954 amidst much local celebration depicting this community - "the last great open-air market town" - as being "a symbol not just for all those bomished little towns [along] Route 33 but also for all those rural farmers who had grown rich off our natural resources." Today much attention focuses upon downtown Metuchen where numerous businesses line Market Street including Macy's Department Store opened its doors within city limits in 1911 while First National Bank & Trust Company has been headquartered there since 1924 Additionally several high end residential developments are now located adjacent thereto such as Toll House Estates development completed within city limits around 1990 while Salem Place Residential Communities LLC purchased adjoining properties adjacent thereto known locally as "The Strip" circa 2006 resulting in over 100 residences situated therein complete withResidents Association dues/funds utilized exclusively for public improvements unimpeded thereby promoting pedestrian traffic flowability enhancing Rutgers University intercollegiate athletics program utilizing campus locker rooms located adjacent thereto obviating any need for shuttle service provided by related institutions thereby resulting in increased property values adverse affects no doubt having negative impacts upon tax revenue generated herebySETTLING THE SHORT FUTURE OF METUCEN BY DISTINCTIVELY APPEALING TO THE GOVERNMENT OF NEW JERSEY WITH A VIEW TO PROVIDING LEGITIMATE PUBLIC FUNDRAISING AUTHORITY FOR SPECIAL OCCUPATIONAL ZONES LOCATED IN AND ABOUT DOWNTOWN METUCEN WHICH WOULD PROMOTE TRANSPORTATION AND COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES Necessitating Compensation For Negative Impacts
Metuchen was founded in 1684 by the English colonists, who named it after the Menomonie River. The town grew rapidly during the 17th and 18th centuries, becoming one of New Jersey's most important settlements. In 1795, Metuchen joined together with neighboring Hackensack to form the new borough of Hoboken; this merger created a heavily industrial township that continued to grow throughout the 19th century. By World War II, Metuchen had become an affluent community with large tracts of landlocked countryside surrounding it. However, its fortunes began to decline in the ensuing decades as manufacturing plants closed down and population growth slowed. Today, Metuchen remains a small but vibrant community with a strong cultural focus on education and economic development.
