Metuchen was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1664. The name means "large wood." In 1824, Metuchen became a Township in Middlesex County and in 1838, it attained the status of a Village. In 1916, Metuchen became an incorporated town and has since grown to become one of New Jersey's most populous communities. The town is home to many local businesses and cultural attractions as well as a large number of students attending the nearby Rutgers University School of Education. The center of Metuchen is located on Route 9A, across from the George Washington Bridge. Many locally popular restaurants are found here including Blue Ribbon Bistro, Joe's Pizza, and Mahoney's Tavern. There are also several shopping malls located within walking distance of the township limits. The first Europeans to visit Metuchen were Dutch in 1624 and they built a small fort there. The town was founded in 1701 by Captain John Montresor and his wife, Elizabeth. In 1712, the English burned down the Fort Warren Hotel in Metuchen after capturing it from the Dutch. The British built a new fort at what is now known as George Street and renamed it Fort Mercer. The town continued to grow until 1834 when it was merged into Trenton, New Jersey.
