Metuchen, New Jersey is a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York–Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name is derived from the Lenape word "manteca" meaning "place of battle." The first European settler in Metuchen was Nicholas Gaultier (1664-1725), who purchased land from the Lenape on October 17, 1692. In 1714 he and his family built a sawmill and gristmill on the East Branch of the Hackensack River. In 1809 John Doolittle bought property from Nicholas Gaultier and erected a stockade around what is now Metuchen High School to protect his wheat field from Native Americans. In 1812 Doolittle married Ionequa Purdy and founded Metuchen Academy; it became an all-boys school in 1832. During World War II, Metuchen was one of two communities within 10 miles (16 km) of Manhattan that were not bombed during the atomic bombing raids by US Strategic Air Forces on September 2, 1945. On May 11, 1948 ground zero for Operation Crossroads—the atomic bombing raid that destroyed most of Hiroshima—metropolitan area residents gathered at Amherst Square to witness construction beginning on Mount Rushmore National Monument just east of town center. Present day North Avenue forms one side of this square kilometer long park/museum complex which also includes Independence Hall (Hiroshima Memorial Museum), Science Museum Of America Building (National Atomic Research Laboratory), First Presbyterian Church (1948), and other significant buildings associated with early American society including mills and homes dating back to colonial times

During the Great Depression, many businesses closed up shop because they could not afford to compete with those located in larger cities or within commuting distance. However, some residents did manage to keep their homes and continue to live there during difficult times. Some examples include: Mrs. Harry Harkins who managed her home until it burned down in 1933; Mr. George Terwilliger who made his living beaching cars for local fishermen; Mrs. Gertrude Ewing who baked bread from her ovens until her kitchen caught on fire; and Drue Coleman who ran an ice cream parlor out of his house through the entire depression era
Metuchen was founded in 1798 by Jonathan Metuchen, a Revolutionary War veteran and merchant. It became a township in 1834. The township was renamed after George Washington in 1868. The population of Metuchen grew to over 20,000 by 1940. In the 1960s, the township began to experience rapid growth in the manufacturing sector as a result of advancements in technology such as plastics and electronic equipment.
