Metuchen is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The name Metuchen comes from French for "the head of a mill." The first settler in Metuchen was Nicholas de Montresor (1504-1560), who erected a gristmill on the river's edge in 1525. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century as Methodists and Baptists arrived to settle in what became known as "The Old Colony." By 1795, Metuchen had an enrollment of 1,200 people and its own schoolhouse. During World War II, Metuchen played an important role as the site of two main airfields within walking distance of one another: Clifton Army Airfield (later Cannon Air Force Base) and Monmouth Airport. Metuchen was incorporated as a borough on April 14, 1942; it remained an unincorporated municipality until its merger with Paramus on January 1, 2009. In December 2020, voters approved a measure that would allow for annexation by Paramus into the Borough of Metuchen effective February 1st 2021.

The community also played an important role during World War II with its munitions plants housing many Allied war planes and tanks.
