In 1837, Metuchen, New Jersey was the first town in America to adopt a municipal ordinance outlawing the carrying of firearms on Election Day. The ordinance was enacted to prevent Democratic Party candidates from being attacked by Republican opponents who might try to bring handguns into the town for protection. This law lasted until 1938 when it was repealed due to public opposition. The first gun store in Metuchen opened its doors in 1841. It was run by John Gorman and his wife Mary Gorman. The first revolver purchased from this store was a .22 caliber Colt Civilian Rifle. In 1859, local resident Samuel Atherton opened a gunsmith shop at 9 Park Street which became the nucleus of what is now known as Metuchen Firearms company. In 1861, James Wolkowsky established a blacksmith shop adjacent to Atherton’s shop on Main Street and this became known as Wolkowsky & Sonsmithy (later Barker’s Armory). In 1871, Prentice Archer established an armory at 5 Broad Street which eventually became known as Archer Arms Company Limited (later Remington Arms). From 1865-1868, George Halsey operated a grocery store at 10 Main Street which later became called Halsey’s grocery and then Halsey’s department store. In 1899, Nathan Hale sold his interest in Halsey's department store to William Lemensohn and Associates who began operating it as New York City's first handgun dealership featuring both new and used guns from around the world. This business continued until 1934 when it merged with J&B Sales Co., Inc.. During this time period also, J&B Sales Co., Inc.'s sales office relocated from 6 Livingston Avenue in Brooklyn Heights to 124th street east of Manhattan Avenue just south of Lincoln Boulevard in Queens Village where they continue operations today as JJM Guns LLC under the name "Metuchen Firearms". Famous firearm manufacturers such as Smith & Wesson (1911-1960), Remington Arms Company (1868-1934), Ruger Manufacturing Company (1895-1983) were all located within easy reach of Metuchen throughout these years; making it one of America's most active firearms communities.

Metuchen, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 11,898. The name Metuchen is from the Lenape word mek-tuhn meaning "big country." The first European to see and map the area that would become Metuchen was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1624. In 1837, John Morris founded Morris Township which became Metuchen Township on April 1, 1838. On October 15, 1847, a group of residents of Morristown petitioned for township status with metropolis status as soon as they replaced Newark as their new capital. On December 5th of that year approval was given to form a borough with a population of 10,000 people. The Borough of Metuchen consisted of all but one block of what would eventually become Raymond Heights and most likely also parts of South Orange and West Orange (now part of East Orange). It was dissolved on May 6th 1860 when it merged into the newly formed township. From its inception until 1965 there were no elections to the township board other than by virtue of being included within it – making it one-man rule at best! In 1965 referendum voters approved merger into Passaic County so again elections were granted to the Township Board by virtue Of mergers & dissolutions over 50 years! finally taking place in 2013! Today Metuchen has evolved into an vibrant community full of culture and commerce - home to several universities including Rutgers University-Newark (Rutgers), Seton Hall University (Seton Hall), Monmouth University (Monmouth) and Edison Community College (Edison). There are also numerous businesses such as L’Oréal USA headquarters located just east acrossriver from town limits - complete with world famous art galleries throughout!
