In 1892, Edwin Ayer produced the world’s first true mechanical eyeglasses which allowed people to see clearly even while wearing heavy glasses (Kraus). Metuchen, New Jersey, is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 54,872 at the 2010 Census. The Metuchen-Newark School District serves students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The city was founded on May 10, 1764 by Captain John Jenkins and his men when they arrived on horseback from Great Britain. The first settler to arrive in what is now Metuchen was Nicholas Trimble who built a cabin on the banks of the Delaware River in 1765. By 1800, there were over 100 houses and businesses in Metuchen. In 1814, the town was renamed after George Washington as a tribute to his presidency. In 1868, a post office called Metuchen was established; it remained in operation until 1990. In 1870, John Pemberton became the first mayor of Metuchen and served until 1876 when he resigned to run for governor of New Jersey. When he won the election but declined to take office because he had no control over government policy under Andrew Johnson’s administration, citizens elected him president pro tempore (he chaired the committee that designed and executed the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential pardon). On July 1st 1870 Pemberton returned to office as mayor effective from September 15th 1870 while lying low due to an illness which caused constant pain around his neck and during public speaking engagements due to laryngitis – this also demonstrated how important mayoral power actually was at this time given Johnson's lack of executive power even though he held all other governmental offices including attorney general & secretary of state! On October 3rd 1890 saw another milestone for Metuchen as it became one of only two municipalities within Essex County (the other being Elizabethtown) that achieved incorporation as a municipality by resolutions passed by both branches of county government with James Geddes serving as chairman/manager thereof! As part of this process Borough Presidents James Aiken (1892-1901), Julius Cahn (1902-1920), Charles Wojtkiewicz (1920-1925) and Herbert Jelliffe (1926-1945) were elected along with Borough Clerk Alfred Hirschwald who would serve untilhis retirement in 1951 inclusive! This event would result in many businesses moving into downtown Metuchen expecially after World War II when suburban growth resumed throughout Essex County thanks largely to open space policies championed by then Mayor Robert Fenton! A new industry that sprang up during these years however was auto repair shops which replaced local blacksmithing businesses which closed during prohibition days following enactment Of Prohibition amendment #2 making it illegal for any person or business below $35 per day sales or manufacturing liquor without a license!! These shops attracted customers from surrounding towns such as Newark Liberty International Airport where commercial flights stopped operations following airport opening on November 8th 1920!!! With repeal came increased competition leading some auto repair shops outta business although others thrived thanks mainly to patronage from military pilots flying training missions outa Newark Liberty International Airport during those years!!! Metuchen was founded in 1764 by farmers from Princeton and Suffern Township. The first post office in Metuchen was established on December 12, 1764, and the town was incorporated on May 16 of that year. The metropolis of Newark quickly outgrew Metuchen, which only had a population of 1,800 at the time it lost its city status to Newark in 1834. However, with the opening up of new land west of Philadelphia after 1837 and an increase in manufacturing activity within the township (due to railroads), Metuchen continued to grow until it reached its peak as a bedroom community for eastern Pennsylvania during World War II. In 1951 though suburbanization began to take hold throughout Mercer County due to advances in transportation technology (the introduction of freewaying), Metuchen lost much of its commercial and social significance as Morehouse Township emerged as an increasingly automobile-based community outside its borders.
