Metuchen is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 29,826 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is from the Delaware Tribe and means "place of many fish." The first European settlers in what is now Metuchen were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1685. They named the place "Ammundestadt" after their captain Amundsen, but it was not until 1714 that they founded a small village on the site which they called Nieuw Amsterdam (New Amsterdam). After English colonists arrived in 1764, they renamed the town Metuchen after Mount Morris (the location of today's Princeton University). In 1873, Metuchen became part of Hunterdon County when it was formed from parts of Mercer and Union Counties. Metuchen was incorporated as a township on April 14, 1868, from portions of Hackensack and Morris townships. On October 15th of that year, it became a borough by an act passed by the NJ Legislature. On July 1st 1959 it became an independent city with its own government and mayor. Metuchen's rich history can be found throughout its municipal buildings located on North Main Street between West Avenue and White Street - including those dating back to 1714! Municipal services are provided by Mayor John Alesi with Assistant Mayor Rick Kiefer responsible for administration and finance; Borough Manager Tom Sayer oversees public works while also serving as liaison to other municipalities within Hunterdon County; Superintendent Michael Vecchio provides education/ Parks & Recreation services; street cleaning takes place twice each weeknight; weightlifting takes place every Saturday morning at Stadium Park adjacent to Newark Liberty International Airport where community members can watch American boxers compete.; With more than $27 million invested into infrastructure over 10 years ago- making Metuchen one ofNJ’s most “walkable” communities- Mayor Alesi has continued to make progressual improvements such as adding new sidewalks throughout Downtown along North Main Street as well as install bike lanes throughout all neighborhoods for expanded transportation options.,

Metuchen, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settler in Metuchen was Nicholas Mennone, who arrived on July 4, 1764 from Italy and named it after his father-in-law, John Metuchen (1685–1762). He had been associated with the English East India Company and sailed to America as part of the convoy that reached Philadelphia on October 20, 1764. The first store in Metuchen was opened by Isaac Decker on May 25, 1814. The first school was organized on November 10th of that year by Rev. Amos Ewing under the name "Ewing Academy". On December 14th of that year a fire destroyed most of the town center including both schools; however Reverend Ewing rebuilt them within 6 months using local materials and labor. The Second Great Awakening started in this area and soon Methodist missionaries were presence in Metuchen providing education and religious services which helped spur development. In 1819 Nathaniel Jarvis Jr., son of Nathaniel Jarvis Sr., founded what would become Union Mills; it became one of the largest textile mills in North America at its peak production during World War II. In 1865 saw construction begin on what would become known as “The Star” – later renamed Metuchen High School – one of only six high schools west of Chicago open to boys until 1974 when girls were admitted statewide in New Jersey via integrationist policies pursued by Governor William Hughes (D). Prior to enrollment at METUCH high school students took classes at Milk River Valley Day School located 2 miles east across Route 11 from where METUCH currently stands today on land once occupied by “The Star” industrial complex/facility now used for housing/parking/industrial uses etc.. In addition to day school students also attended Latham Township Library which operated out of an old paper mill building adjacent to METUCH until 1971 when it moved into its current location just south OF Main Street next door to Precious Blood Catholic Church.(Latham Township Library still operates today) METUCH has always been home to many different types music events throughout their history ranging from jazz concerts given each Saturday morning followed by lightningfast dance lessons taught by Mrs./Mr./Miss RILEY every Wednesday evening culminating with a giant pop concert held each springtime outside featuring top names from all genres represented!
