It is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now comprising Metuchen was first settled by English colonists in 1685 as "South Amboy". In 1714 it became part of Middlesex County and was incorporated as a village on February 17th, 1810. It experienced rapid growth from the 1830s through the 1840s when railroads were developed and factories were built in nearby Paintersville and Easton. By 1860 Metuchen had reached its peak with a population of 20,000 residents; however this declined rapidly during the American Civil War due to military production in nearby Philadelphia and Camden. During Reconstruction Metuchen slowly regained its former economic vitality with several largescale manufacturing projects such as the installation of an electric grid and reconstruction of roads and bridges. However after World War II both local businesses and industrial output began to decline again until Metuchen regained some stability during the late 1990s with a resurgence in retail development as well as increasing residential development around Route 322 & Interstate 95 (I-95). Today Metuchen is a vibrant community featuring many cultural attractions including four museums - The Rutgers Museum of Art, The Delaware River Museum of Marine Science, The Newark Museum and The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences - as well as three primary schools: Edison Township Schools (elementary), Penn Central High School (junior high) and Hillside Elementary School (elementary). There are also several smaller churches including First Presbyterian Church (founded 1827), Christ Episcopal Cathedral (founded 1865) and St John's Episcopal Church (& Parish Hall) (established 1903). The region surrounding Metuchen has long been important for agriculture; today there are several farms within walking distance of most households along Route 322 or I-95. These include Farmington Hills Farms’ 93 acres near exit #4 on I-95 eastbound between Dover Street & Clarks Ferry Road; Henderson Farms’ 137 acres just west of Exit #2 off I-95 northbound between Maple Avenue & Beaverbrook Boulevard; Morris Farms’ 154 acres south of exit #1 off I-195 westbound between Wayne Avenue & Oldenburgh Road; Asbury Park Arsenal’s 106 acres northeast corner at Broad Street & Williamson Avenue - allof which produce apples, grapes/grapefruit, onions/onions etc.;and Morristown No 1 Orchard’s 82 acres northwest corner at Mercer Road & West Orange Avenue.

In 1865, Metuchen merged with nearby East Brunswick to form what is now Metuchen-East Brunswick Township. In 1916, Metuchen-East Brunswick Township became Hunterdon Borough after it be merged with neighboring North Wildwood Borough; Hunterdon Borough then became Hunterdon Township in 1998. Metuchen has two ZIP codes: 08834 and 08771. The community's nameakes are Methuselah High School (now known as Edison High School) and Elijah Muhammad Middle School (now known as Islamic Daycare). It also contains several smaller businesses including First American Bank and A & P Supermarket
The Metuchen, New Jersey community was formed in 1836 when the towns of Metuchen and Northumberland were merged. The town of South Amboy was created in 1868.
