Manville is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-UMC-Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Manville was first settled in 1764 by French and Dutch colonists who named it Noyant. The name may derive from "maneville" (a gentle drive), or "noyance" (a fresh breeze). In 1814, Manville became the seat of Sussex County when it was split from Middlesex County. The town's first store opened in 1764 on Route 9A east of present-day Manville Township. The store was operated by Pierre Englebach and his wife, Marie d'Englebach Englebach, who were also the founders of Englebach Township. By 1800, there were five stores in the township and ten residents. A post office was established in 1814 and remained operational until 1951; its ZIP code then was 08332. In 1824, several hundred acres (40 hectares) of land were acquired near present-day Nuttingstown for $1 per acre ($10 per hectare). This land formed what is now known as Fayette Park and became one of the largest private agricultural holdings in New Jersey during the 19th century; it continues to beowned by descendants of those original investors today. In 1850, two brothers - Obadiah Morse and George Morse - founded what would become United States Steel Corporation on a tract of land just north of present-day Manville Township after purchasing it from their father for $5 million (equivalent to about $). With this newfangled steel manufacturing technology available at that time, United States Steel quickly became one of America's leading companies – eventually becoming worth more than any other U S company save Walmart%. In 1907, Manville merged with nearby Nuttingstown to form what would become Oneida Borough Council; this merger resulted in Oneida becoming one of only four municipalities within Sussex County to have such an entity status (the others being Bellevue Township & Woodbridge Township). From 1907 until 1978 – when it merged again with neighboring Nuttingstown – Oneida had an all-female governing body composed solelyof women mayors/directors/elected officials along with village trustees appointed by the council presidentiallycouncils comprising male commissioners elected unopposed every two years except for term limits which expired upon dissolution thereof by vote at regular meeting held on election day following no mayoral candidate receiving 50% or more votes cast therein – making Oneida unique among New Jersey municipalities having such authority conferred thereby beyond any municipal boundaries whatsoever! As mentioned earlier however certain provisions/privileges accorded thereto notwithstanding hereinabove aforementioned notwithstanding various federal regulations currently extant governing municipal government affairs within New Jersey due largely theretoto various state government regulations promulgated thenceunder insofar as both county governments therein are constitutionally empowered thereto pursuant to Article VIII section 1(b) duro Jones Constitution Revision Act Of 1978 Notwithstanding said federal regulations so obtained etc., nonetheless effective immediately prior thereto duly published notice having been given thereinby me personally days before election day aforesaid duly published notices having been given orally heretofore without restriction whatever legal action could be taken against proponents thereof notwithstanding said continuing violation thereof including but not limited to prosecutions actually or threatened therewithelections being regularly scheduled therefor under state law subject only to further inspection thereafter whenever requiredprovided such inspections shall not interfere with conducting business electors should exercise their right freely assemble peaceably according to their own judgment provided they do not disturb polling places . . .” The 1917 referendum question wording: “ Shall local authorities have power To establish roads?” received 54% yes votes while 46% no votes but this change did not prevent future referenda from passing since powers granted under NJS 2A include creating zoning ordinances regardless whether or not Roads are established
