In 1881, James Hickey established himself as a farmer and died there eight years later at the age of ninety-six. Hickey’s son James Fenton Hickey succeeded him as head farmer and ranchman for many years.. In 1919 he purchased 180 acres (72 hectares) near present-day Route 9 north of town about east of Center Road for $1,000 cash from Isaac Hershberger who had sold it to him previous year for that purpose..
