Manville is a town located in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,835 as of the 2010 census. The town seat is West Orange. manville was founded in 1788 by Nicholas Manville and his wife Sarah Shortridge and was named after the Manor House in London where they lived for a time before moving to Princeton Township. In 1805, the township became part of Mercer County and Manville became its capital. In 1828, it absorbed portions of Rahway and East Orange and renamed itself Manville again. The present day form of the name comes from Nicholas Man ville which means "man's village." There are several museums located within or near the town including the Newark Museum of Art, Pemberton Park Zoo, and the Rutgers University Library at Old Queens Road Campus. The first post office in Manville opened on November 15th, 1800, under the name Northamptonport (later changed to North Brunswick). It served until December 12th of that year when it changed its name to West Orange because Postmaster General John Woolridge felt that there would be more people living in towns with two post offices than one. On March 10th, 1802, it became part of Mercer County when it was annexed by that county from Middlesex Township; however it reverted back to West Orange on February 1st following an act by Governor James Ketchum which increased local government control over township affairs. On July 11th 1870 - just four months after its incorporation into Mercer County - both schools in town were closed due to lack of pupils attending them due to a large influx of Germans coming through Readington during World War I; however classes resumed a few weeks later once all available students had been enrolled in school outside the community (due largely to travel restrictions placed on Jersey City residents fighting abroad). Manville is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the borough had a population of 27,812. The name comes from John Manville who founded the town in 1795. It was first settled by Dutch and English colonists in the early 18th century. In 1814, Manville became part of Bergen County. From 1872 to 1984, it was part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Manville were Dutch traders in 1624–25. They named it "Mannewille" after one of their leaders, Dirck van Moerbeke (1577-1626). In 1686/87, several hundred English settlers arrived as part of an effort to push out Native Americans from what is now Newark and Paterson Counties along the Delaware River. The English called this area "Newark Township". The township was formed on February 14, 1795 when John Manville set up shop here as a trader with his brother Jacobus at the foot of Bound Brook Mountains near present-day Hackensack Avenue and Broad Street (now North Brunswick Avenue).
