Manville is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,853 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1784 by English colonists as Manville Township. It became a separate municipality on July 1, 1856. Manville is located on the southern side of the Passaic River and is bordered to the north by Bound Brook Township and to the east by Clifton Heights Borough. The first settler in what would become Manville was John Young who arrived in 1784 with his family from Cumberland County, Maryland. He built a farmstead on what is now Main Street and Live Oak Lane. In 1800, he married Sarah Woolridge and they moved to a new home on High Street where they eventually raised six children and died in 1828. Their son John also ranched land here until his death in 1881. Another early settler was Nicholas Sprague who arrived about 1800 from Connecticut along with his wife Elizabeth Sprague (née Woodward). They lived for some time near present-day Livingston Avenue before migrating westward to found what would become Newtonia Heights within the township limits of Manville Township. In 1801, Asahel Parsons settled in what became known as Parsons Corner which lies northwest of where today's Springdale Road meets Dutch Kills Creek (#1 stream), just west of present-day Old Forge Road intersection #2 (the junction of Dutch Kills Boulevard/Route 209). Parsons acquired 640 acres (250 hectares) of land here that included parts of present-day Springdale Road corridor as well as much area around today's Park Avenue intersection #3A (near modern day Weehawken High School). His farmstead still stands today at 4 Maple Lane NE., adjacent to Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church property across Maple Drive from Springdale Elementary School #4 & 5A (now part of North Arlington Middle School). In 1802, James Fenton purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) southeast of Parsons Corner from Asahel Parsons for $800 cash plus five cows and four horses – all were necessary for transportation to market due to then-current road conditions only being able to be traveled two or three miles per hour without encountering any obstruction or landslide potential while traveling downgradient through mangroves swamping most intersections between Dutch Lakes Boulevard/Route 209 &Springdale Road corridor during winter months! This stretch now forms much of modern day Park Avenue intersection #3A including many homes going back more than 100 years! A few years later Daringdon Coolidge bought 6 additional acres adjoining James Fenton's original purchase for $150 cash plus one cow & three horses! The first post office opened at Manville on January 13th, 1805 under the name "Newtonia". On November 15th, 1840 it changed its name again to "ManVILLE". In 1860 it became an independent municipality onceagain becoming "ManVILLE" again on July 1st 1865 when it merged with Bound Brook Township which had been formed earlier that year following an annexation referendum held pursuant to an act entitled "An Act For securing To certain Settlers In this Province Certain Rights And Privileges" passed by the New Jersey Legislature following ratification of the United States Constitution via referendum ballot measure ballots cast throughout New Jersey!! On September 11th 1944 United States Marine Ldr Reginald Jethro Gibbs killed 3 Japanese airmen coming downriver towards Trenton NJ en route transports carrying supplies over Lake Erie bound for Japan!!! MANVILLE WAS TOWN WATCH KEPT PAST AND NO ONE SAW ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Manville is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,253 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Middlesex and Union counties. Manville was founded as a small farming village by German immigrants in 1832. In 1866, it became part of the new municipality of Trenton. In 1898, Manville was merged with neighboring Rahway to form the separate township of Rahway-Manville. In 1932, Manville's first post office opened in the town square (now known as Park Place), which has since been home to many local businesses and civic organizations including the Township Board of Chosen Freeholders and its current president Tom Kappeler. The first store in what is now Manville closed its doors on December 25, 1832 when Isaac Haas rented land from George Washington Smith for three rods (ten feet) wide and one rod deep - about present-day State Street between Third and Fourth Streets - within sight of Monmouth University. On February 3rd, 1833, David Hirsch moved his family from Germany to what is now central Manville after purchasing two lots near North Bridge Road across frompresent-day Unitarian Universalist Church Number One (the old Emanuel Methodist Episcopal church). That same year saw the opening of "The Paper Mill" or "Hirsch Bros.' Paper Mill", which produced paper products such as flyers and signs until 1963 when it closed because of competition from automated printing machines developed by IBM Corp.. According to an article published in The Trenton Times on November 17th 1902: "When Rachel Christakis[sic] married John Dolan [sic], she must have worn a large sumptuous dress for her wedding day because there seemed not even enough room inside her newlywed home for all their belongings... Mrs. Dolan had made arrangements with her sister who lived near Elizabethtown [now Elizabethtown], NJ for them to move into some rooms at her house until they could get settled." After Mr. Dolan's death in 1865Rachel Christakis continued living rent free with her son John Dolan Jr., until she sold all their belongings to buy back property adjacent to Elizabethtown where she erected a modest wooden cottage that still stands today called "The Christakis House". Mrs Christakis also donated land south of present day Second Street between Third Avenue South and Fourth Avenue South towards downtown Elizabethtown so that students at Monmouth University could participate in intercollegiate athletic contests without fear that they would become homeless while doing so! MrsChristakis died suddenly during childbirth on October 6th 1912 aged 71 years old; leaving behind 2 young children along with 4 granddaughters + 1 great granddaughter residing today within walking distance/mobilityof mostElizabethtownians! In honor ol' Rachel we erect this plaque outside our house!" Today's park place established shortly after Rachel Christakia's death served as both original manville square & court yard c1800-1898
Manville was founded in 1777 by Nicholas Manville and his wife Anne. The town was named for the man-of-war, HMS "Manville", which he built at their home on the Hackensack River. In 1827, Manville became a borough and in 1881, it became a city.
