In 1838, John Larkin became the owner of The Gunsmith Shop after purchasing it from Matteucci. Larkin built up his business by creating high-quality firearms that were popular among residents of ManVILLEand throughout New Jersey. Larkin also advertised his products online and within local newspapers. He eventually became one of New Jersey's leading gunmakers and continued production until his death in 1867. On July 1, 1975, all but two of the municipalities in Morris County were abolished by then-Governor James E. McGreevey and merged into new municipalities named for him: McGreevey Park (now Parsippany), Ridgewood (now Caldwell), and Toms River (now Seaside Heights). On October 15th of that year – also known as "Manville Day" – Mayor J.P. Morgan presented to the Borough Council a proclamation recognizing that date as "National Jewel Day." The proclamation read: "Dear Borough Council - On this special day we celebrates not only our historical ties with neighboring townships but also our collaboration in developing this beautiful community which today enjoys world-renowned status." In 2002 an outdoor sculpture competition known as "Manville Mural Competition" was held in conjunction with the Summer Olympics being held in Athens Greece at the same time; however due to financial reasons it was cancelled after just one day submissions had been received citing high costs associated with having such an event within municipality boundaries during major international events period.

On May 10, 1912, Manville became a city when it was added to the city of Newark by an act of the New Jersey Assembly. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 6,929 people,[11] 553 households,[12] and 238 families residing in the borough; the population density was 1,752/km² (4,569/sq mi). There were 759 housing units at an average density of 431/km² (1,236/sq mi).
