Manville is a borough in Cumberland County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,064 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–UMD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The site of Manville was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1612. The name originated from the man that lived there and called it "Manswijk" (meaning "mansion"). In 1764, Captain John Smith discovered a group of Indians living near what is now Manville and named them "Waspungs" after their leader. In 1785, the town's first post office was established under the name Beesleystown. In 1814, land west of present-day Manville were purchased from Native Americans for $1,000 by James Fenton and his brother Jonathan Fenton. They laid out a new town on this land which became known as Fenton Township. On November 2nd, 1824, Manville received its charter from the state of New Jersey under the name Borough of Newark. On February 10th, 1860, during an event to celebrate opening day for Rutgers University's undergraduate body (), Mayor John Ladd requested that Princeton University students join him in singing "We Are One" at Central Park (). After protests by Princeton students who felt that they had been cheated out of their opportunity to participate in this prestigious event - including then-Rutgers president Nicholas Murray Butler - Ladd ordered all but one student to leave Central Park before continuing with the song performancenat
