The first European settlers in what is now Manville were Dutch traders who called it "Mantuaansche Vlucht" (a Dutch word meaning "migration"). However, the town's name may have been derived from its location on an old military post known as Fort Amsterdam or Fort Menendez. In 1714, Nicholas-Jacques Conte built a small fort at what is now Manville and named it after his birthplace, Mantua, Italy. Named for Nicholas-Jacques Conte because he purchased land in the area in 1714 and developed it into what are today Manville Township and Borough and portions of Hackensack and Plainsboro townships, Manville was incorporated as a borough on February 13, 1851. On December 3 of that year, township became part of Bergen County when its boundaries were revised by Act of Congress following the victory over Mexico in the Mexican–American War. According to Census Bureau estimates released in July 2010,[1] there were 27,448 people residing in Manville as of the 2010 census[2]. Of these residents (or 97% thereof), 20% identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino; 33% spoke English as their primary language; 9% Spanish; 5% Italian; 2% French; 1% Portuguese; 0.5% German; 0.3%; Polish/Jewish resident) making up less than 1%. In 1824, John Manville and his family moved to Manville from New York. He became a prosperous merchant and political leader in the area. In 1869, he was appointed justice of the peace for Middlesex County. He served until his death in 1920.
