Manville is a town located in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,868. The name is derived from Englishman William Manville and his wife Sarah (née Smith). The first settler in what is now Manville was John Wayland who arrived in 1732. In 1766, Colonel Thomas Pemberton purchased land here from the Lenape people and founded Pemberton Township. On November 8, 1792, Manville became part of Borough of Newark when it merged with that borough. In 1807-1808, Manville joined the Union as a village and remained so until 1951 when it became an incorporated town under the name of "Manville". The original township hall still stands today and serves as a museum for local history. The first post office opened in 1827 and served until 1861; the current post office opened on October 26th, 1912. The manor house which still stands today was built by General James Wilson after he acquired it during his years as Mayor of Newark in 1829- 1830; its present form dates back to 1905-1906 when it was completely renovated using funds provided by George Washington Carver Jr., one of Manvilte's earliest settlers. The manor also contains significant artifacts from Wilson's time including furniture pieces and tools used by him while mayor including a cabinet made out of hickory wood that he used to write executive orders at City Hall which are still on display there today! The storefronts along Main Street were added around 1920 for advertising purposes only – they remain essentially unchanged to this day! Manville was founded in 1795 by Captain John Manville and his wife, Elizabeth. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was first established. In 1807, the community became the Township of Manville. On October 15, 1814, the Township of Manville was annexed into the Borough of Hillside. In 1881, the Borough of Hillside merged with the Township of Manville to form the Municipality of Hillside and Manville. The Municipality was abolished on January 1, 1983 and re-established as a part of the new Township of Monmouth County on that date. The original land for what is now known as ManVILLE was given to Captain John Manville by Lord Cornwallis in 1795 after he helped purchase it from the native Lenape tribe for $10 per acre. The area originally consisted only of swampy territory that drained into New Jersey’s Hackensack River Valley. However, over time developers assessed and platted much more land around what is now downtown Monmouth County including parts of Long Branch and Atlantic City which made possible its growth as an incorporated municipality within Monmouth County during its early years. The main thoroughfare through downtown today is Liberty Avenue which runs parallel to NJ Route 8 (the old Dutch Road) which once ran along both sides of this important artery connecting New York City with Philadelphia via this route called “the Great Eastern Highway” back when this road also connected these two centers side by side before becoming a divided highway following Pennsylvania Avenue westward until splitting off at Newtown Square where it proceeded eastward to join PA Route 4 at South Orange Street). Manville was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Manville, a Loyalist who fled to America after the Battle of Bunker Hill. The town expanded rapidly during the 18th century, due in part to its location on the banks of the Passaic River. In 1814, Manville became a Township and in 1834 it became a Village. In 1908, Manville was amalgamated with neighboring municipalities to form the new borough of New Jersey City.
